I personally hate the modern type of show, especially the back biting and insult in Weakest Link.

The same is true of Golden Ballls with Jasper Carrott.

Call me old fashioned but I prefer the polite shows of yesteryear such as Sale of the Century despite their blandness.

I always remember Michael Rodd shaking hands with all the young contestants on Screen Test.

Bruce Forsyth genty ribbed the contestants on The Generation Game but it was all in good fun and Bruce was always endearing when he did it.


All modern quiz participants should take the advice of Derek Batey on Mr and Mrs and "be nice to each other."

I think there are just to many of them these days, and they are come off being really tacky. I will take the old fashioned versions of Generation Game and Blankety Blank over the nonsense I see these days.

I quite like some of the modern game shows but hate the celeb ones with a passion, half of the celebs on the weakest link just look at her blank when asked a question, then derrrr! The penny drops!

Golden balls as a game is ok but the enormous greed that comes out at the end with the split or steal is really ugly!

Now that I`ve said all this I`ve realised that there arnt in fact many that I do like. I watch the lottery shows, they are ok, I also watch eggheads.

I like mastermind but thats more an intellectual quiz show than a game show!

But yes, all the good ones are gone, I used to love the generation game (but not with Jim Davidson for obvious reasons), I liked blankety bank,sale of the century, bullseye and I remember years ago watching ask the family and enjoyed it.

It's funny how there is such hand wringing about issues such as school (and work) bullying and what do kids see when they get home? The Weakest Link which basically encourages the idea that making nasty remarks about people's appearance, dress sense, place of birth is 'entertaining'.

Unfortunately 'Mastermind' is yet another victim of dumbing down. It was once held in high esteem by the BBC - but with a move in the schedule and a change of host, it suffered from a diminution in quality.

Have you tried to answer the questions and see how many you get right?

They have made it a bit more chatty with Humphrys talking more to the contestants but I don't see any reduction in the standards of the questions

I'm not a fan of this. I prefer the question master just to ask the questions.

The subjects covered have declined in standard. I recall a contestant specialist subject was 'The history of Only Fools and Horses'.

They have always had some specialist subjects like that. The trouble is that the narrower you make the subject area the more detailed and difficult the questions are.

One of our P&P group, David Parker, entered in 2006 and answered questions on The Lives and Films of Powell and Pressburger.
He was third to go in the specialist round. The two contestants before him had got 14 points each. The questions David was asked were:

1. What was the distinctive logo of the production company that Powell & Pressburger launched in the early 40s?
2. For which actress did Pressburger originally write The Red Shoes in 1937, the role eventually going to Moira Shearer?
3. In The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, what does Clive Candy reply when Barbara says "We must go darling. We have the Bishop for lunch"?
4. What is the title of the first volume of Powell's autobiography published in 1986?
5. Which famous dancer and teacher has a cameo role, playing herself, in The Red Shoes?
6. Pressburger studied engineering in Prague and at which other university before becoming a scriptwriter in Berlin?

How many could you answer in 2 minutes?
Remember that it takes a while for the questioner to read out some of those longer questions. And you're not allowed to interrupt him, even if you know the answer after the first few words (like with question 10).
And you have to do all of that with the additional pressure of what is probably your first appearance on national TV.
David got them all right in the 2 minutes. Very well done David!
He then went on to get another 11 questions right in his general knowledge round to finish up with, as the question master put it, "a stonking 29 points".




I certainly don't consider those questions to be easy.
Sadly David lost out in the semi-finals where he chose Stevie Wonder for his specialist subject
