Default Sky plus - "great for my nan!"

Is anyone else irritated by the current SKY plus advertising campaign: all those well paid celebrities endorsing its wonderfulness.

I want to yell at them "Yes, but it cost 10 quid a month to rent!" As does, V plus, the Virgin version. Worth considering perhaps if you're already a Sky customer but why not buy a PVR for around 200 quid and own it outright?

It's the equivalent of saying: " DVD players are really great! Subscribe to our expensive package and you TOO can have the privilege of renting one from us"

It's the old Microsoft con trick again - never let the punter know he has a choice.

I'm ashamed to say I love my Sky+, not the garbage they transmit but the ease of recording or using the series link button so it'll keep recording The Avengers/Prisoner etc.

SKY + FOR MY NAN[/b]
Sounds a good swop

I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous.

Yup, butthe point is any good PVR (Personal Video Recorder) will do this - you don't have to pay Sky for the "garbage". I have a Humax; not top of the range at all but it has all the 7 day epg, series link features etc - and I don't swell the coffers of Murdoch when I use it.

The Sky brand does not equate with PVR - any more than Hoover does with vacuum cleaners - but , judging by the comments, nobody is getting this yet.

A lot of people still equate all non-terrestrial channels with "Sky", even when they are available on cable or other satellite systems as well, even when they're cable only

It is the power of advertising - backed up by the blatant plugs for programmes available on channels available on Sky in all the Murdoch press (Sun, Times etc.) where they are all advertised as Sky channels even if Sky doesn't fund them in any way.

Does the Sun still give plugs for everything that Ross Kemp does now that he's separated from Rebekah Wade, the editor of the Sun?

I love my Freeview PVR (for the same reason as you - cost me a £100 and no subscription to Rupert) but it's true that (as with iPod/MP3 Player) the brand is more familiar than the generic name. I suspect that most people have no idea what a PVR is, even if they have one!
