I saw Danny Webb on stage a while ago doing 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest' ... he is a fantastic actor.

Would that be the same Danny Webb that was in new Who episodes The Impossible Planet / The Satan Pit as Mr Jefferson, the security officer they left in the tunnel to face the Ood?

The IMDb lists 6 actors called Danny Webb. The one mentioned above is called Danny Webb (V) and there's a pic of him there

Danny Webb is a brilliant actor who does comedy as well as villains.
He was very good in an episode of 'My Family' where he married the daughter, Janie. Freddie 'Parrot-face' Davies played his father and Edna Dore his mother; it was one of the more memorable episodes.

I think Danny would make a good Dr Who.

They won't have an old man because Smug T. Davis can only write chases and an oldman wouldn't be able to do that.

Nesbitt would kill it.

I think Kenneth Cranham is a wonderful actor. I last heard him in the radio version of The Barchester Chronicles where he played the pious rector of Hogglestock, and it was a terrific piece of character acting. Another member of the same cast was David Horowitz, another fine actor, and I saw him live in a play last year.

It's maddening when top drawer actors appear on TV so infrequently, and in relatively small roles in series like Midsomer Murders and Rosemary and Thyme and other such tosh, when they could easily take on a leading role and show all the ex-soapsters how to do it properly!

For Dr Who I think Tom Baker should come back. Since his new found popularity via Little Britain I'm sure that the over indulged little kiddies would warm to that remarkable voice.

I also think an actor such as Tom Baker would bring some credibility to the role, the present Who is a cross between a junior estate agent and a bookie's runner! The other name that springs to mind for the role is Simon Callow.

What about David Thewlis? Or Gary Oldman? Ken Stott? Bernard Wrigley? Duncan Preston?

No, don't stop me, I'm on a roll...........hang on, I think the pills are wearing off!

Actually, I reckon Bernard Wrigley WOULD be good. I certainly would prefer an older actor in the part again - like samkydd says, it brings more credibility to the character.

The rumour has been denied by Steven Moffat. It is the fifth story down at the time I am posting this.

Well he was good at it in Daleks' Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D. (1966). But that was 40 years ago. And do you think his dying in 1994 might make it a bit difficult for him to play the new Who?

I think his character in Cold Feet is very different to the cynical one in Murphy. Possibly the accent makes him seem the same in whatever role he plays.

That seems to be something that befalls Irish, Scottish and Welsh actors. Or anyone with a strong accent.

The accent was never a problem for Richard Harris, Stanley Baker et al, both convincing in a variety of roles and with the talent to change it around a bit so as to make them interesting to the viewer. IMHO Nesbitt, even as 'cynical' Murphy, is always the same. The superficial trappings may change, but underneath is the same boring old performance. He has nothing new to offer a role so consequently would probably be a disaster as Dr Who.
