but when names start to be bandied about in the Press, there's usually something afoot.
Usually blank pages to fill.... I think that probably every male actor (and a few female ones) in Spotlight has been linked with the role by the press at some point or other.

Apologies if this has been said before on this thread, but I just read that Geoffrey Bayldon says he was offered the role of Dr Who before William Hartnell.

I LIKE Geoffrey Bayldon. Now he WOULD make a good Dr Who - even now at 83 years young.

Starry x.

To be fair, their accents were nowhere near as strong though. Another strong accent is that of Richard Davies. I was watching a rerun of One foot in the grave the other day and he had a part in it. The moment I heard his voice and without even seeing him, I thought "my god, it's Pricey from Please Sir!!

I think we need to see people in the part before we really know how they do. I remember when Sylvester McCoy got the part. I used to enjoy watching TISWAS but the man was embarrassing and I really wasn't looking forward to seeing him as The Doctor.

I actually thought he was quite good.

How about the sons of former Dr Whos; Sean Pertwee or David Troughton. Both good actors and would be credible in the role? Why not just scrap Dr Who and come up with something new?

He has nothing new to offer a role so consequently would probably be a disaster as Dr Who.

On reading that I'm left wondering if we're both talking about the same James Nesbitt ............. having seen him in the Canterbury Tales episode, the recent Fairytales episode, Cold Feet, Jekyll and Murphy's Law I'd say he was very different in each of them (except for the first two series of Murphy's Law where Murphy was more like Nesbitt's character from Cold Feet). The biggest change as far as I'm concerned was his very different portrayal of Jekyll in that series and Murphy in series 3 onwards of Murphy's Law - he turned in a very different performance with barely any wise-cracks and a very good 'hard man' image. The stories and writing in series 3 on of Murphy's Law were also excellent which helped too.

We are talking about the same James Nesbitt. He was okay in the pilot for Cold Feet (probably 'cos I hadn't seen him before) but IMHO he has done nothing worthwhile since. I just cannot stand watching the man. I simply find him to be incredibly wooden. Cutting out the wise cracks and adopting a 'steely' glare didn't make him any more convincing as a hard man .... he was still the bloke from Cold Feet, only with stubble.

Paul McGann was great....it was the script that was poor. He had the charisma, the looks, the talent (Actually, he still has, the bastard) but not the timing....having said that, he got the best design of Tardis, not that's much of a consolation I suppose..

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

Just his two portrayals in Jekyll should be enough to convince most people. How someone can change themselves that much without heavy use of CGI/prosthetics is amazing

That had great writing as well (by Steven Moffatt) and Nesbitt delivered the drama and the gags very well.

Like the one where he'd leapt into the lion's enclosure at the zoo, killed the alpha male and taken over so that they now all obeyed him. When the police asked him to come out quietly he waved a hand round at the lions and said "I have my pride"

If they use this chap Nesbitt they may as well go the whole hog and turn it into a sitcom, it's getting that way anyway!

Personally I'd go for David Troughton (son of a Dr Who) or Sean Pertwee (son of a Dr Who) who are both credible actors in whatever role they play!

Why on earth would using Nesbitt turn it into a sitcom? Have you ever seen the guy in serious roles?

David Troughton would be excellent, but I've always thought that Sean Pertwee was a truly abysmal actor.
