I'd like to see Eddie Izzard in the role next as he's delightfully eccentric, or a self-confessed fiction/horror geek like Simon Pegg - with Nick Frost as his assistant.
Supposedly Eddie Izzard was one of the three possibles for the casting of the 9th Doctor (the other being Alan Cumming) but neither of them wanted to spend 9 months of the year in Cardiff. Presumably had either been cast, we'd have had a rather different Captain Jack

Hi Whovians.
Actual fact Richard E. Grant portrayed the Doctor in a send up for charity as well as in voice form for an animated cartoon. So I think he should have a go if his cartoon image does not fit in with the so far TV incarnations. A subtle one would be Roger Daltry of The Who . He could then sing Talking About My Regeneration. On this note I think I had better sign off.

They wanted Bowie to play a villain in the mid-80s adventure The Caves of Androzani. Christopher Gable ended up doing it.

If there is to be a new Who soon I think Captain W's point about spending 9 months in Cardiff is the main one to consider, therefore he (or she!) isn't going to be that big.

I liked Christopher Eccleston and I was sorry when he left. Now I just think the programme is over promoted (especially in the Radio Times) and I don't give two hoots who takes over.

Eccleston was a good choice to reintroduce the franchise but a feature actor like him or Carlyle (another candidate) are probably always going to get a film offer that will tempt them away.

Tennant has proven a fine successor, altho this latest series run is pretty mediocre and Tate's recruitment hasn't helped.

Izzard was in the frame when RTD brought it back but ruled himself out as he thought the scripts were terrible...

I thought Eddie had the best dialogue in the entire film.

Yes, 'cause he was saying what we all thought....

The best sequences of that film - the most Avengerlike - were the training village and the teddy bears board meeting. I particularly liked the bit with the teds in the lifts.

If he'd been better partnered, Fiennes might just about have squeaked past the post with Steed - Broadbent was a rather good Mother - but Thurman just gabbled her lines as if she was in a hurry to get the last train home. Some of her dialogue, delivered properly, with a little thought, a la Rigg, would also have passed muster, but she made it sound like gobbledegook. I am thinking particularly of the 'tick follows tock' sequence in the padded cell. We tuned into this on SKY recently and I found myself hearing the dialogue, as Rigg might have done it, in my head.

the Avengers was doomed from the moment Thurman was cast.Gwyneth Paltrow- the original choice- would have worked.
In addition the original script was superb.

Favourites for next Doctor Who emerge
An actor who has already appeared in Doctor Who is the early favourite to replace David Tennant as the star of the sci-fi show.

Cold Feet star James Nesbitt has often been mentioned as the actor in the frame to become the 11th timelord.

But bookmakers Paddy Power favour Paterson Joseph as the favourite to take over the role, offering odds of 3-1 on him becoming the first black doctor.

He has already appeared in two episodes of the show playing Roderick alongside previous doctor, Christopher Eccleston.

Joseph, 44, trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and is probably most familiar to television viewers as Mark Grace in Casualty, and he also starred alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in Hollywood film The Beach.

Life on Mars star John Simm and his co-star David Morrisey in political drama State of Play are also given odds of 8-1 and 5-1 respectively to pick up the keys to the Tardis.

Diehard fans of the series have indulged in feverish speculation about the possible successor to Tennant almost from the moment he took over the role.

Ignored by the bookmakers but a contender that has piqued the fanbase's interest is Notting Hill star Rhys Ifans.

The Welsh star would certainly be at home in Cardiff where the series is filmed.

Outside contenders could include Paul McGann who became the timelord in 1996 in a one-off Doctor Who film.
