Default The Politician's Wife (1995)

I'm not very clever in using the "search" function, so I may have missed an earlier thread on this Channel 4 production.

Wow! New to me thanks to the recent Acorn DVD, THE POLITICIAN'S WIFE is a compelling socio-political suspenser that echoes the John Major government's crises of the time, and was prescient about the then-unknown Monica Lewinsky/Bill Clinton flap in USA.

As a dramatic work, TPW is another Brit triumph of excellent writing and acting. Always surprising for her depth of character, Juliet Stevenson is the anchor of the story. Ian Bannen, Anton Lesser and Frederick Treves were the most notable supporters.

Quite unafraid of stepping on toes, TPW is dead-nutz accurate in its portrayal of post-Thatcher Tory infighting; "wets" vs hard-liners; a fading effort to privatize services; and tabloid hysteria about nothing at all.

Though over a decade old, THE POLITICIAN'S WIFE seems fresh and relevant - especially in its timeless fable of "she who stood by her man" - or did she?

Damn good.
