Default Who's the best Sherlock Holmes villain?

who gives the best performance as a villain in any sherlock holmes series/film?

my vote goes to anthony valentine as baron gruner in 'the illustrious client' (casebook of sherlock holmes, itv) who shades it over robert hardy as 'charles augustus milverton!

I preferred Peter Wyngarde as Gruner in the Wilmer series. Eric Porter as Moriarty in Brett's The Final Problem is hard to beat and George Zucco (Adventures of Sherlock Holmes) in the same role was pretty good too. Gerald Hamer as Alastair Ramson in The Scarlet Claw is probably the best IMHO in the Universal series. If I had to pick one it would be Eric Porter.

He was played by Rondo Hatton in the original Rathbone Movie The Pearl of Death, based on Conan Doyle's The Six Napoleons.

Pool old Rondo Hatton suffered from the disease agromelcy (think that's the spelling), in other words, a less advanced version of the problem John 'The Elephant Man' Merrick had.

The landlord of my local pub was diagnosed with the same malady when a doctor happened to pop in for a swift one and noticed that he had pronounced thickening of the fingers.

It's acromegaly (from the Greek words 'acron'-extremities and 'megale'- great).
Probably why he was kept in permanent shadow to make more sinister the effect of his role as the Creeper.
He certainly gave me the spooks when I was a youngster. He appeared in twenty or so films from 1930 onwards.

Eric Porter as Moriarty in The Final Problem in Brett's version of Holmes. We first see Porter as Moriarty in The Red Headed League.

i thought eric porter was an excellent moriaty but when judging a depictation of a villain i tend to appreciate the performance more if i end up disliking the character as a person and with moriaty there's respect shown by holmes which lessens my sense of dislike-if anyone knows what i mean?
