This thread has wandered away somewhat from its original theme.

Getting back to the BBCs i Player, this is not really a substitute for a TV licence since you cannot get all programmes on it you only get the ones which the Beeb deem to make available.

For example, on Sunday we had Last of the Summer Wine which is available to watch. However on Saturday on BBC4 there was an old episode of Sykes. Not available.

The same applies to films. Some are available to watch again but others on SEARCH just come up with zero.

This is similar to the scheme launched some years ago by Tele West, but it contained very few programmes and many of those available were items which the average person would not have watched in the first place. For example who wants to look at a four day old news bulletin?

As London Glasgow and Birmingham are the three largest cities in UK this is hardly surprising....and surely 16,300 caught for London is an underestimate -
there must be many more with such a transitory population on short term tenancies....

Still Jonathan Ross, Chris Evans and Sir Terry Wogan need to put bread on their table and need your support.....

The Press Association: Licence dodging hotspots identified

TV licence dodgers are pouring shame on their home towns as a league table of the worst offenders was revealed.

Londoners are top of the list for dodging TV fees with more than 16,300 people caught without a licence in the last six months.

Across the UK, a total of 209,000 evaders were caught. They were each slapped with a fine of up to £1,000.

Glasgow and Birmingham came in second and third place with nearly 11,700 and more than 4,700 evaders caught respectively.

TV Licensing has a database of more than 29 million addresses, which allows it to detect unlicensed properties.

Joanna Pearce, TV Licensing spokeswoman, said: "No town wants to appear in TV Licensing's league of shame. Buying a TV licence is simple and can be done in minutes online, so there's no excuse for licence dodgers letting the side down.

"TV Licensing's extensive database shows precisely which properties are unlicensed, meaning inquiry officers can target addresses where they suspect people are watching TV illegally."

Dundee, Wolverhampton and Paisley all climbed into the top 20 cities for license evasion, while Middlesbrough, Leicester and Cardiff exited the table. Wales is the only UK nation with no cities in the top 20.

A colour TV Licence costs UK £139.50 a year (US $ equivalent: $ 280) .
