Default Ask the Family

Who remembers this classic quiz show with Robert Robinson in the chair. It ran for many years into the eighties Not the Nine O' Clock News did a wicked parody with Griff Rhys Jones as Robinson.

Whenever I think of this show I always think of other programmes that were tramsitted in this early evening slot such as Quizball. Question Of Sport and Its a Knockout.

I remember this programme. It was broadcast on a Tuesday early evening. Robert Robinson was a very good Chairman - a role he replicated in Call My Bluff, and on radio for many years in Brain Of Britain.

In the Not The Nine O'Clock parody all the contestants were Chartered Accountants - even the children.

Stephen Fry also does a good impersonation.
"Mother and older child only"

I always imagined these families sitting at home, after the children had done thier homework OF COURSE, testing each other while holding encyclopedias (father with his pipe). Tea and scones sitting in front of them on one of those silver twirly things. Later on watching the sky at night and the epilogue .

xx

We`re changin` lodggggggggings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Quite right , with children having weird hair cuts , nearly all with glasses and the mother and father dressed in tweed and all living on the same street as margo and jerry.

A middle class programme for middle class viewers. Also, I cannot remember many ethnic minority families taking part which perhaps says it all really.

What am I doing here Sgt? I should have been having lunch at the Saville!

I particuarly remember the round where a piece of music would be played, as it was being played the families would start whispering to each other but the question usually had only a tenuos link with the piece of music played.

Then there was another round where an everyday object would be projected at an unusual angle and the contestants had to guess what it was.

Yes Faginsgirl, and the earnest younger sibling would find more Monday night tv work by turning up on Young Musician Of the Year or Top Of The Form.
