Default A Hundred Quid for an MGB Roadster!

Did i see it right on George Gently tonight?

In 1970, i paid £200 for an 1962 Sprite. This guy's selling a 1964 MGB in 1964 for £100

I think some researcher got their wires crossed. Either that or i was well stitched up!

I love the way that TV journalists describe the outrageous lengths that film-makers go to in their search for period authenticity. As if!
Not only was it plated as a new car, but it looked quite tatty - about 40+ plus years tatty to me!.
Still, as they say in Acorn Antiques, "don't worry about that, darling, only us pro's notice that sort of thing".

I caught a brief glimpse of Gently last night only to hear him use the phrase "Give me the heads up". Nobody in the 1960's used this phrase! Heads up has only been with us since the arrival of Heads Up technology circa 1990.

It was explained in the story that he was 'selling it cheap' because he was in debt.

Happy Birthday Daddy .... I love you!

Er yes - there's cheap and there's ridiculous. I'm guessing the market value would have been around the 500 quid mark, but i'm not about to spend time researching it myself, so i'll admit i could be wrong.

Interesting about the "heads up". I noticed that, and I had thought it was a recent addition. But i was watching "Law and Order", made in 1978, the other day and the phrase features more than once in that. More in the sense of "watch out" admittedly.

But, I do hope i heard incorrectly when i thought i heard the young detective say "you do the math".

The phrase 'heads up' can be heard in some US films from the 40s when it is used as reference to coin tossing .... I am guessing here but I would imagine it eveolved into a phrase meaning something positive ie 'heads I win' etc.

The only reference to maths in the episode I can recall was after GG took the piss after the young detective claimed to have done 'O level German'. Later, when they were discussing his car, he said he also had to sell it because because his wife was pregnant and 'three doesn't go into an MG .... I did O level Maths as well'.

Happy Birthday Daddy .... I love you!

Default £100 mgb

The list price of the first MGB in 1962 was £690 + £256 purchase tax.
So a 1964 MGB would be around £1150.00
Cheap at £100?

I wonder if the Beeb will sell to us for £100 ... we could share it, two weeks a month each maybe?

I'll let you have the pleasure!

Actually, i did own one - a 1972 model - for a couple of years around 1979-80. It was great fun. That was until my best mate drove in the back of me as i drove it to a friend's garage to store it for the winter. So i sold it with a crumpled rear end - for about £700 if memory serves.
