Default I Claudius

I watched "I Cluadius " often and have the DVD of the series. What I have often wondered is that in the episode with Derek Jacobi as Claudius, someone is talking about that little island, named Brittiana, that will not amout to much. Was that line in the book or was that an inside reference??

I read both Graves' books, I Claudius and Claudius the God quite a few times. Of course, I don't have a photographic memory, but I don't recall Graves saying that. Claudius did invade Britain (Julius Caesar's occupation apparently didn't 'take').

That series was excellent, by the way, and Derek Jacob was Claudius--as was John Hurt the eccentric, murderous Caligula. Being familiar with the book(s), I was not disappointed with the way the series was made. Most times, if you really love a book, stay away from the filmed version--Hollywood, or Pinewood, or whoever, is sure to mess it up in some way.

Brought back good memories....

I CLAUDIUS…BBC TV…Director Herbert Wise…
Cast Inc…Derek Jacobi (BAFTA Award) John Hurt…Brian Blessed…
This was British Actors at their best…
I worked on quite a few of the thirteen episodes and just used to watch in amazement at the way the actors could remember the very long speeches and the many moves they had to make during a scene.
Derek and John stole the show as far as I was concerned.
It was an education in acting to watch these people work.
I was lucky enough to be on the last day of shooting and when Derek finished.
The whole cast and crew stood up and gave him a standing ovation.
(I can still hear the applause to this day)
On one episode I was playing a guard and at the end of it I had to chop off Messalina’s (Sheila White) head…
After I had done the dirty deed Sheila cried her eye’s out and come to me and sobbed on my shoulder. (Perhaps I’m not all bad?)
Herbert Wise held the show together for many months and is still directing today.
Well done Herbie…

Aitch,

But did everyone else pronounce it as it was spelt, I CLAVDIVS?
Or was that just me and my family?

We also always pronounce the Vs in BVSH HOVSE, the big BBC building on the Aldwych, the home of BBC World Service
