Default Steptoe and son were the black and white episodes better

Do forum members feel that the black and white episodes transmitted from 1962 to 1965 better that their colour counterparts. I accept that there were some genuine classics in the latter episodes, but I sense that Galton and Simpson were dumbing down a little, a case in point being the Kung Fu episode from 1974, which I really dislike.

I think the ones transmitted in colour were best, the writing got much better and they settled into thier characters a bit more. There was more of a chemistry then.

Is it me or did Wilfred Brambell change the character of Albert in the later episodes he seemed younger in his ways.

When it started the character of Albert was only in his mid sixties but he seemed much older.

In my opinion Wilfred always looked the same age. Even when he was young he looked OLD!

I think those episodes from pre-'65 are distinctly average, and that Season 4 was an immense step-forward in Galton and Simpson's writing - and they continued to improve until peaking around '72.

Watching both B & W and colour versions last week I think its great that they grew with thier characters, they changed like people do in real life but the relationship was just the same. Harold seemed even more intolerant which WOULD happen as the years went on.

The b&W episodes are definately worth watching. I find the lovely Harold in his flat cap very sexy

I guess I prefer the colour episodes mainly because they get more regular showing on the BBC. I think the actual dialogue is stronger in the original four series though, with the latter four tending to lend more towards typical sitcom set-ups. But all are fun

The best one I liked was where the antique dealer fancied Harold, brilliant, especially the old man.
