Has anybody got the DVD of this? I've never seen the series (I believe it was broadcast on old Bravo) and just wondered whether they's recommend it?

Public Eye and Strange Report are two more 60s tv series that passed me by have had a new lease of life on DVD. Any comments?

(yes, there's clearly a dearth of decent DVD releases currently)

I can vouch for Public Eye, I would recommend without hesitation. Superb stuff. Real 'Callan' quality drama. I wish modern tv drama was 1% as good.

As for Strange Report, based on the ep. in the Sweeney boxed set; not really my cup of tea, but there you go.

For £2 some branches of THE WORKS have two volumes of INVIS MAN on one DVD. The DVDs aren't brilliant - echoey soundtracks - but if you want to make up your own mind on the show, what's £2 ?

Very much of it's time ; mainly just watchable now as a curio and to do a bit of 'where were they then?' type spotting of soon to become fave character actors.

PUBLIC EYE - Well worth the money. Good solid drama and characterisation.Excellent lead performance from Alfred Burke as Marker, and good guest casting. The Brighton series (1969) very much more looking at the character of Marker after his release from prison. More story driven on the next season.

STRANGE REPORT - an excellently produced set of DVDs but the series (as a whole) lacks the 'pizazz' and 'escapism' factor of it's ITC stablemates of the time. Hence (I think) a bit more of an acquired taste and (dare I blaspheme?) a bit slow at times...

I have always thought that Alfred Burke is just so good (in anything), he doesn't even have to try....effortless....

Public Eye it is then.

The DVD is produced by Network who also released the Ripping Yarns DVD. They can often be picked up for a snip from retalers online.

The Brighton series is freely available ; also a few copies float around on EBay. The subsequent season is at present an exclusive item only available through Network's online sales page.

I haven't heard anything yet as to when it's due to go out on general release.

The '69 series is cheaper on the Network site than Ebay.

(a recent trend I've noticed is that ebay DVD's are becoming more expensive than most other outlets)

I agree -

generally I find the trend reversed if I ship something from America ; often Ebay US shops are a few dollars cheaper than Amazon etc. Possibly something to do with a limited market for cult titles, or overstocking and clearance.

Here in the UK Ebay prices have gone up - mostly from people making a quick buck. Never ceases to amuse me how in SALE season, suddenly all these boxed sets pop up on EBay - or like when the Peter Rogers book was remaindered ; you couldn't give 'em away on there....

The Brighton season's not as 'navel gazing' as some reviews I've read have said, and there's a well written, strong, relationship with the landlady and Marker. Besides, like 'Edgar W' posted, you can rarely go wrong with Alfie Burke (if ever!)

Wise choice, DB7. Public Eye is a real slow burner, based on superb acting and superb scripts to drive the show forward; as opposed to car chases, shoot outs, etc.

IMHO Public Eye is one of the finest TV dramas ever made; with Callan being the best.

I have never been a big fan of the ITC stuff; (ducks and puts tin hat on) all a bit too comic cuts for me.

As for Alfie Burke, he's one of the 'main men' as far as I'm concerned.

I am a blatant ITC fan ; all that escapist stuff, slightly camp occasionally but good fun. Personal fave is MAN IN A SUITCASE - ITC with an edge ! And of course, THE PRISONER - the one that started me off on talking about film & TV with like minded parties.

But - the world would be dead boring if we all liked exactly the same stuff...

That's one of the big aspects of this forum that I like, chatting around here often encourages (or enables, by way of trades) you to look at things you've never seen before - all good stuff in my book ! [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif[/img]

I'm most disappointed. Nobody said "I haven't seen The Invisible Man"
