Default 39 Steps BBC Remake

From The Knowledge:-

The BBC is remaking John Buchan’s classic spy thriller The Thirty Nine Steps. The new feature-length production, which will be given a contemporary feel, is to feature during the corporation’s Christmas schedule.

The new version will star Spooks heart-throb Rupert Penry-Jones. It tells the story of an innocent man who gets caught up in a political conspiracy which threatens the security of Great Britain during war-time. The plan is to give the film the kind of slick feel you might associate with James Bond.

Mr Penry-Jones doesn't make my heart-throb. He seems to convey emotion by looking pained and a bit constipated.

Worst thing that ever happened to Spooks...

More money being wasted by the BBC, on yet another remake.

The book has never been filmed accurately before, the closest being the 70s version. If it is a 'true' adaptation of the book that they intend to make I am all for it, because it a a terrific read. My enthusiasm is tempered, however, by the phrase 'contemporary feel' .... that usually means some directing school whizzkid out to make a name for himself by 'jazzing' it up with over-direction.

Happy Birthday Daddy .... I love you!

Yes indeed - what an imaginative and unexpected choice. Sarcasm the lowest form of wit? No, re-making a re-make of several other re-makes is witlessness in its purest form.

But are they remaking the previous films .... or doing a faithful adaptation of the book, which has not yet been done. They may even be updating it to the present day (which I would hate). Let's wait until we know what they are planning to do before we become too sarcastic.

Happy Birthday Daddy .... I love you!

If the 39 Steps needs to be remade, then lets hope they make a faithful adaptation.

Me too.

The worst adaptation would be if it was shot like a pop music video with a thudding "music" under-score and stupid wobbly camera shots.

Precisely my thoughts soon after I posted. I blame the wine. But you're right - our interpretation of 're-makes' often ignores attempts to return to the original text for inspiration. We shall see.

Oh no, not the dreaded BBC "contemporary feel" again - and a total lack of imagination. What's wrong with the other Hannay books - Mr Standfast is a far superior book and The Three Hostages is also very good.

The Three Hostages was produced by the BBC in the 70s, with Barry Foster as Hannay. I would love to see that again.

'The 39 Steps' is definitely the least of the three stories, I suppose it gets filmed for the same reason most new Sherlock Holmes efforts are about that bloody hound! It's the most famous one.

Happy Birthday Daddy .... I love you!

Default The 39 Steps on BBCtv at Christmas

BBC - Press Office - The 39 Steps

I haven't seen this mentioned on the forum, so apologies if someone has already posted it. It seems an interesting project, neither Hitchcock or Buchan, and I don't recall a television production being aired before.

Start every day with a smile and get it over with.

Version No 4. Hope its as good as the previous 3. I've got them all, and even after umpty-ump viewings I still can't decide which one I like best. Each has its own charm.

Me neither .... one of the few titles where the various versions are all good. I watch all of them regularly.

Happy Birthday Daddy .... I love you!
