"Yes! Time travel but with a new twist. I like it! It sings! But how can we at ITV twist it better, mmm? Make it more original than the original?"

"Urrm – have about… travelling FURTHER BACK in time – say, the Tudor period.”

“Nah, the BBC are raping the Tudor period at the moment”

“Oh! Oh! What does everyone love? Costume Drama! So how about… Jane Austen, eh? Jane Austen, but projected into the modern day?”

“I like it! It’s fresh, it’s a new twist on an old reliable favourite. Everyone loves Jane Austen - it’s a winner!”

“How about Jane Austen lost in time but STRICTLY ON ICE? Eh? Appeals to all the demographics there?”

“Brilliant! The strap line will be “You could be Jane!” On ICE! Plebs could vote off the person least likely to write a best selling romantic novel whilst skating! And we’d be quids in!”

“Yes! It’s up my flagpole and fluttering! Is Phillip Schofield free? Email him. Great new show Phil, Saturday night winner!. Call me.”

"Wait! do we need a vote? Can't Jane Austen just 'appear' in the 21st centuary?"

"How does that work? Where's the reveue? People are used to phoning into ITV programmes...?"

etc etc
Well done,Sir Olly:that brilliantly sums up the drama department at ITV.

Well, that was really strange.

I have nothing else to say about it really. I watched all of it, mind you and recorded it and so did my friend who a few weeks ago was going to boycott ITV and write in. I think she is probably watching the 'making of' now.

What has it opened the door for, though..!?

Spoilers Ahead!

Yes, that was rather strange. I was somewhat disturbed that a bright, intelligent young woman would, in effect, chose to remain in a fantasy world rather than sort her real life out. I felt sorry for Amanda'a boyfriend, who had obviously been pining away in her absense (she noticed he'd lost weight) and was making a real effort to be worthy of her.

Still, hopefully Lost in Austen is a sign that ITV is trying to upgrade its drama output (The Children was excellent, as well) - as I may have mentioned earlier in this thread, it felt genuinely strange to be tuning in to ITV for something that wasn't a crime series or the news.

I wanted to see 'The children'..forgot about that..

Yes, strange conclusion..I just thought the whole thing was a bit..awful..really!

But it's a bit like liking Tom Jones and the Partridge Family (as I do) - it's inexcusable..but strangely compelling.

I still think that it is insulting to rip apart a carefully made novel. There was a time when adaptations were held in suspicion - now, it seems - everything is game..

Next Middlemarch - on ice!

What I liked about Lost in Austen was that it was able to assume that large parts of its audience would be familiar enough with the novel and its characters that it could play about with the plot and charaters and people would understand the references (even if this familiarity was due to film and TV versions).

Light and fluffy though the series was, it credited the auduence with some intelligence and prior knowledge.

True. But, as you say, there is a danger that the familiarity is due to Andrew Davies - one step removed and so on..and now there will be some that will think of 'Lost in Austen' when thinking of Jane Austen.

I have always thought it was quite nice to preserve treasured finds as much as possible in people's minds and give it some dignity.

I remember Steve Coogan saying, in some capacity, once that he was going to make a series 'Sherlock Holmes in Miami' and at the time, only about ten years ago - it was considered hilarious.

I just think, if we devalue everything - then we devalue everything..if you know what I mean. Where we will be able to draw the lines and say 'this is actually exemplary of a great deal of thought and care and, perhaps 'genius' and this other thing is, in fact, trashy but fun. I think it is worth preserving the distinction.
