Northern Lights fans might want to read (or more likely reread) Bill Bryson's Neither Here nor There - there's a whole chapter about waiting around for the Lights to make an appearance.

I think he said that he was quite happy to believe that they hadn't superimposed the images - but had enhanced the lighting during post-production..I think!?

I don't think that necessarily counts as 'cheating' though..it is a similiar thing to using photoshop and bringing the light up a bit.

And that is about as technical I get I am afraid..hoping to amend that but can barely work the remote.

It was fantastic..I'm going to keep it.

Dame Joanna Lumley would not lie.

The only thing fake was the fake fur on her coat.

Steve, it's only ever as real as you want it to be.

im sure theres a bit of tv trickery going on ,not to the lights themselves as i know they can be spectacular . more likely perhaps they werent as spectacular when the film crew and joanna were there

I read in RT that Joanna had a lifelong ambition to see the Aurora and mentioned it on Desert Island Discs in 2007, and guess what, an "enterprising" film company approached her to make the film.
Oh, Serendipity.
Perhaps she should have mentioned her lifelong ambition to own a Ferrari as well.
I fill up when I think of poor Joanna crying into her pillow every night for fifty-odd years in her rat-infested slum, aching at her inability to fund a trip to the far-off land of Norway.
If only she'd had the good fortune to have taken a career path which had been more rewarding, she'd have been able to fund her own dream-trip years ago.
Surely there should be a lottery-funded charity which could make the unattainable dreams of poor distressed showbiz folk come true?
Anyway, a happy ending this time, but for all we know there could be many more deserving cases in the wings: Bruce Forsyth nursing a yearning to watch the Masters in Augusta, Michael Parkinson longing to see the New Year's Day Test in Australia.
Dig deep, everyone.

How about a docu highlighting Gary Glitter's lifelong ambition to coach the under 12's Cambodia national soccer team?

You're getting the idea, nandywell.
Apparently, when he was in prison, Gary approached the chaplain and informed him that he would like to enter the choir.
"Wouldn't we all, mate", came the reply, "but most of 'em won't have it".

Yes Dave, I think that was part of the film Local Hero. Developer wants to build an oil refinery in Scotland becomes interested in the Northern Lights.

You don't have to travel to Scotland. We had a terrific show at the end of the 80s in Northamptonshire. Not frequent I'll agree, but given the light pollution here they were stunning.
More info and pictures on:
Aurorae : The solar system : Astronomy fact files : Astronomy ...Aurora over Northamptonshire(Image: Kevin Smith) The Aurora Borealis and Aurora Australis are seen in the northern and southern hemispheres respectively. ...

I'd watch the Ms. Lumley do her ironing and feel it was worth the licence fee.

Hi. As the photographer of the Northern Light fottage to this programme, I really have to comment your word about this happening.

quote from Blue Post prod....: "The digital stills animation sequences of the Northern Lights footage and its integration with the HDCam material was testing in terms of both grade and online. The sequence has ended up stunning, packing a visual and audio punch to match the emotional intensity of a very precious moment.” quote end.

Here is also a link to their site: Joanna Lumley.....

No filmcamera I know about can shoot high quality frames in this low-light conditions. So they choosed to make it this way, with digital stills. And I'm working with lenses like Canon EF24mm/ f1.4, who is very fast and collect a lot of light. This night was really stunning and the people in the post prod. has done a great job.
And she also moved, as you easily can see in the show.
Its no hocus pocus, just pure hard work :)

So its really happened and if you or other want to join by tours to experience this, like the lovely Joanna Lumley, please visit my site www.auroraphoto.no.

Amazing! Thankyou for that!

And my friend was right too - I shall have to tell him.

I think everyone was slightly stunned. When something is that impressive, you are bound to get people questioning it, I suppose.

Superb job.
