Default Doreen mantle/ mrs warboys

Wasnt she superb as Mrs Warboys in One Foot In the Grave, many classic moments from her. There was the time when she told the story of Margaret Meldrews dream about stranging a bald man to some complete strangers in a cafe.

My personal favourite the traffic jam episode when they put the tape on and Eric Idle sings the song "Victor Meldrew------------," her reaction was brilliant,"at least they can carry a tune." and the episode when she thinks her husband is having affair Victor can be seen laughing his head off when she tells her tale of woe but hes listening to the Monty Python spam sketch on his headphones.

Finally her Trivial Pursuit question on the Norfolk broads about Conway Twitty in the elder abuse at the care home episode when Jean and Margaret wore identical outifits.

Yes F.G. you are spot on about ladies like Mrs Warboys they thrive on gossip and other peoples misfortune, I think they also like to meet up midweek for lunch at their local carvery have a nice meal and a gossip and then go home to watch Diagnosis Murder (nothing wrong with that per se) and make some chutney for the Church sale of work.

By the way F.G. you may have spotted Doreeen Mantle in your Dvd's of Duchess of Duke Street, I rememberr you doing a thread about this show.

I have a couple of episodes on video and I have a feeling that Doreen Mantle was a regular member of the cast.

She also pops up surprisingly enough at the beginning of Barbra Steisands film "YENTL"

I can't find the pic, but there was a photo of Dickie Attenborough a few months ago with the Residents of the Actors Retirement home in Northwood, and I'm sure I saw Doreen there......

I wonder what stuff she was in when she was younger, I mean she may have been a stunner when she first started acting for all we know

Not sure about her ealy work at all F.G. but I read some info on her on a book about the One Foot In The Grave Series. I didnt buy it just browssed through it in Borders a while ago. I thinf she was either born or spent a lot of time in South Africa and did some broadcasting work for BBC radio external services.

If I find out anymore I will let you know.

She still does stage stuff - I saw her a couple of years ago as Julian Glover's wife in The Voysey Inheritance at the National Theatre

Doreen Mantle is on the Council of Denville Hall:

I think that she and Marcia Warren are two of our most under-rated actresses.

Lord Dickie's a trustee of Denville Hall and Lady Sheila (Sheila Sim) [3rd from left on the front row in the photo] is on the House Committee

There are a lot of actors being looked after there

Mrs Pip and I had the unexpected pleasure of sitting with Doreen Mantle on a train journey - a very nice person. The character Mrs Worboyes and the actress Ms Mantle are very much the same incarnation though!!
