No, it's a mistake I'm afraid. There are still a number of episodes missing from the BBC. The title refers to all surviving episodes of the series. Somewhere along the line, this point has become blurred and people are assuming they've all turned up which isn't the case.

Play have just found an episode guide and used it to form their listing.

Amazon.co.uk says "This DVD contains all of the surviving episodes from the original 3 series: Entente Cordiale (16/12/64); Double Date (23/12/64); Older Women Are More Experienced (30/12/64); The Suitor (20/01/65); Last Of The Big Spenders (07/07/65); Rocker (18/06/66); Goodbye To All That (23/07/66)."

Still worth buying, of course, and I also long for the complete "Whatever Happened To" series. I did hear that it was being blocked by James Bolam at one point, but I hope that's wrong.

I think they should have done an update as a one-off, as maybe part of a whole season of updates of classic comedies. It would also be nice for Paul Nicholas and Jan Francis to do a 'whatever happened to Penny and Vince' type of thing, or to find out whatever became of the other characters in DEAR JOHN, like Kirk and Ralph. Maybe Rory McGrath could do CHELMSFORD 2006....

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE LIKELY LADS might well be the best sitcom of all time- I even harboured intentions to live in Newcastle for ages after collecting all the repeats in 1995, until a friend of mine from there pointed out that it was 'nothing like that anymore'. Which of course I knew in my heart of hearts anyway. But if we never have an update, then maybe we can persuade ourselves to think that Terry Collier travelled south to Leeds, changed his name to Trevor, developed a love of jazz, became a woodwork teacher and moved in with Barbara Flynn!! There's synchronicity for you.

Bolam, who had a fairly impressive run at British horror movies as well (CRUCIBLE OF TERROR, STRAIGHT ON TILL MORNING) and has played two serial killers convincingly in SHIPMAN and THE STALKER'S APPRENTICE, was also great in ROOM AT THE BOTTOM, a series sadly now only remembered for its infamous cockup shown in perpetuity on ALRIGHT ON THE NIGHT. Rodney Bewes, on the other hand, seems to have vanished altogether!! It would be nice to see him get some work. And Bridget Forsyth is only a couple of years away from being prime Miss Marple material. Buyt it would be nice to see them together again in something.
Talking of updating old classic comedies...whatever happened to the Fenn Street Gang? I gather that the actors who played Maureen and Craven are both now sadly no longer with us. But it would be great to see David Barry, Peter Cleall, Carol Hawkins ( surely the most beautiful actress ever seen on TV ), Peter Denyer etc reunited. Failing that it would be nice just to have the old Please Sir!/Fenn Street Gang stuff released on DVD. All sorts of seventies ITV comedy like Father Dear Father / Bless This House / Nearest & Dearest / On The Buses / The Dustbinmen / Man About The House / Rising damp etc is available. Why no Fenn Street?

I bought series 2 a few days back - such memories. The series was filmed 3 years before I was born, so I had never been aware of the show until the film was screened on BBC1 on a Friday night about 1989-ish. It caught my attention because it was rare to see a film set in my hometown - I've been a fan ever since.

For my generation it's a great snapshot to the time when Newcastle was undergoing mass demolition and re-building (some for the better, mostly for the worst) - a lot of the locations were gone before my time, but as many remain and there are some streets I can't walk down without associating them with the show.

James Bolam seems to have disowned the series - I heard him interviewed on radio a few years back and when quizzed about the series he said (I stress - this is not a direct quote) something along the lines that it was a product of it's time and that was where he felt it belonged. In other words, he really didn't want to talk about it. I felt sad to hear that from an actor whose work as a whole, I very much respect.

By constrast, I've heard Rodney Bewes interviewed and he talked of the series with much affection. In fact, that he made a cameo appearence when the 1973 episode 'No Hiding Place' was remade with And & Dec playing the lead roles.
