Default Mastermind and John Humphreys

Hi.

I still enjoy mastermind but I really did prefer Mag magnuson to John Humphreys. I love the music and MM with his slightly sultry voice added to the dark atmosphere. I find JH to be a nice guy but a bit too cheerful for me for the show, if you know what I mean

xx

There was more tension in the Magnus Magnuson years, John Humphreys has a far more relaxed style chatting to the guests.

A pub I used to use as my local used to be very quiz orientated at around Chirstmas we used to do a Mastermind quiz complete with chair and music, I took part two years running, my specialist subjects were Elvis Presley and British comedy Idid well inboth but fell down in the general knwledge rounds.

I have a claim to fame as far as John Humphries is concerned, my brother was jounalist on our local paper and John Humphreys was a coleague of my brothers he once came to our house.

Another journalist who worked there at the time was Simom Cuff who later became an actor and played a smallish role in early episodes of the Doctor In The House tv series he played a character called David Biddock, he later went on to be a member of the BBCrepetory radio company.

Actually.....I totally dig.

I watched this evening and I have two points to make

1....what the dillidallio is with that ailmess chit-chat prior to the general knowledge questions?
Pure BBC dumb-down. The whole essence of relentless interrogation, that was vital to the tone of the show, has gone.
And the irony is that it's perpetrated by Radio 4's Torquemada.

2....I only got ONE question correct in the last General Knowledge round.

I, too, must be dumbing down.

Yes, that is annoying. It always sounds like the contestants can`t really be bothered with that chat either. I mean, these people are back in the chair and want to get it over with surely? Thier nerves must be shot at that point.

I was an inveterate viewer of Mastermind when it was chaired by the late Magnus Magnuson. The BBC, in their wisdom , decided to revive the programme after a longish sabbatical. The result is, unfortunately, yet another example of the BBC dumbing down.

The subjects covered certainly wouldn't be permitted when MM was asking the questions. Why was programme moved from it's original Sunday evening time to some obscure time in the schedule? Humphreys as presenter is devoid of the gravitas that MM had.

Yes, I have noticed that a lot of the specialist subjects are about entertainment these days. They will be having big brother contestants on there next!

I didnt mind the odd one when MM hosted but its beginning to be a bit too regular now.
