Thumbs up

Why don't Granada put these three series out on satellite/cable? They were excellent - not least because of the great Don Henderson - a fine and sympathetic man - yet another example of the film and television industry's ability to fail to utilise a real talent.

And don't forget The Paradise Club (1989) with Leslie Grantham. Some great work from both of them there. But it was only repeated a few times on TV & I've never seen it offered on video.

ANORAK ALERT ! - It was actually "The XYY Man".

"Strangers" was quite an oddity. It sort of veered between outright comedy based around the grumpy Bulman, to more a hard edged "Sweeney" style.

I'm sure there's some dark secret behind the perrenial non-appearance of Bulman and Strangers. Bulman was one of the most eagely-awaited series when Granada Plus set up, and it never arrived, whereas the largely forgotten Chessgame, a 6-episode Murray Smith created series starring Terence Stamp, was aired.

I get the impression that someone on the production really upset an ITV bigwig.

Our best hope may be a DVD release.

I saw Don back in 1980 coming out of a house about a quarter of a mile from Hampton Court. He wasn't wearing his woolley gloves though!

He also had an amusing cameo role Making Out opposite Stelfox

How does everyone know what series we were talking about? All I see is Don Henderson's name!

another one who died early, The XYY man and Bulman were good, not quite sure about that one with Grantham. Old Don looked a bit of a hard nut, good actor.

In episode 1 of Strangers the climax to the story takes place with a raid on "The Paradise Club"

I quite liked The Paradise Club. It was very lightweight but Henderson and Grantham worked well together and the scripts were generally OK.
