Smile Eastenders

Having stopped watching some time ago as the acting and story lines were so dismal.I happened to watch 20 minutes of an episode the other night and the young actress who was playing Bianca's daughter was for me acting out of her skin.I said to my wife there's going to be more to this rather than just waiting for her step dad.She gave a performance that maybe men would have picked up easier? I dont know but my wife didnt think it when I said. I dont think most of the cast of Eastenders can act but I now know she can.

Every so often a really decent actor - known or otherwise - crops up in Eastenders, only to be let down by a pathetic storyline or lousy scripting. The producers do, however, seem to have a knack of picking child actors capable of acting the rest of the cast completely off the set, lousy tools or otherwise.

I think I mentioned in another thread, young Jamie Borthwick (Jay). That kid has some serious talent.

Most of the best child actors on Eastenders come from Anna Scher's school - or, at least, they used to.
I don't watch it now that it's written with youngsters in mind, but I see that they have drafted in Chris Coghill (Lisa Faulkner's hubby) as Bianca's 'ex' for an incest story line.
I liked Chris in Burn It.

I dont watch it, in fact stopped watching it regularly when Den was having an affair a year after it started.

Gretchen Franklin was good as Ethel as was Anna Wing as Pauline Mother or was it Arthur Fowlers Mother.

Agree with the comments about the young peformers.

Going slightly off topic has anyone noticed that Simon May signature tune has a very similar tune to the Gerry Goffin and Carole King song,"I Just Want To Stay Here and Love You a hit in 1963 for Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme.

I must say I'm uncomfortable with the incest storyline. Because the girl looks and behaves more like someone in her late teens than a child I'm concernedthat it may be viewed as step father having affair with step daughter, (like Bianca and Dan). I think Enders are trying to show that he is grooming her, but as their relationship has been going on for some time I'm not sure if it is coming across this way. Might have been better to show how these monsters operate from the start to make a point and warn unsuspecting single mothers.

It's not really incest, Dai, because the script has made it quite clear that the girl is not a blood relative of either Bianca or her 'ex' (sorry, can't remember his name). What he's guilty of is paedophile behaviour and I think they're trying to show how vulnerable, gullible young teenagers can deceive their immature selves into thinking they love their abusers and will be genuinely loved in return. We're also seeing a small element of control creeping in here, which is how these animals get away with their crimes for so long.

I only hope the actor concerned doesn't suffer any recriminations from the usual bunch of deluded EE fans who can't tell fiction from reality.

Off topic: Does anyone else think he looks like a young George Costegan?

There was an interesting article in the Guardian last week about the steps the production team are taking to protect the actors from the unwanted attentions of the more susceptible fans.

I used the word 'incest' in my post because it is how the media have been referring to the story-line; I don't actually watch it myself so I have absolutely no idea what it is about exactly!

I can't say as I had noticed any resemblance between Chris Coghill and George Costigan myself.

I understand what Eastenders are trying to portray just wondered whether the 'deluded EE fans' as you call them will understand the point. Rumour has it he is going to move on to one of the younger members of the square (not one of Bianca's kids) this I think will make the point much better to viewers and show how children are groomed by strangers or family friends.
