Default The Kumars

Watching "When were we funniest" earlier & notice that they include The Kumars at 42, it also seems to be included in every "Top 50/100 comedy moments" type show.

Is it just me or is this one of the most unfunny shows ever? I admit I only attempted to watch it a handful of times.

I wonder if it's only included as a token ethnic/ PC item.

Unless of course every one else thinks it's great of course!

I have also only watched The Kumars at 42 a few times and it's OK. I get the impression that even the so-called off the cuff remarks are scripted.

It was great, especially Meera Syal as the grandma ('Ummi'). I'm not sure it'd stand too many repeats but some of the comments were great.

Ummi: [to Tom Jones] Wait till you get to 70, you'll get a second wind.

Ummi: [to Charles Dance] Your fans are known as Charlie's Angels. Is that because there are only three of them?

Ummi: [to Helena Bonham-Carter] In this country you are seen as the epitome of elegance and good manners. But I personally was very, very happy to see you in Fight Club playing a right old slut. Did you enjoy it?

Ummi: [to David Hasselhoff about Bay Watch] There were lots of characters on that show with plastic breasts.
[pause]
Ummi: Not to mention the women.

I must say I really enjoyed the Kumars, thought it was quite funny and cleverly done.

Me too ... and that's quite something considering my usual views on recent comedy.

I did enjoy the show (when I'm a grandma, I've told my kids I don't want them call to me Grandma or Nana, but 'Ummie'). I do sometimes wonder, though, whether it amounted to less than the sum of its parts. Talented bunch of actors/comedians and halfway decent writing, but it just lacked something. It never quite matched Goodness Gracious Me.
