Dublin born TV comedien, Dave Allen, died early today (11.03.05) aged 68.
One film only?? 'Squeeze A Flower (1970).

"We spend our lives on the run: we get up by the clock, eat and sleep by the clock, get up again, go to work - and then we retire. And what do they give us? A f****** clock."

"I still think of myself as I was 25 years ago. Then I look in a mirror and see an old b*****d - and I realise it's me."

"A good storyteller never lets the facts get in the way."

On the Irish Troubles: "Which is the fastest game in the world? Well, it's played in Belfast pubs, and it's called pass the parcel."

On having half a finger missing: "Am I the Irish comedian with half a finger? No, I'm the Irish comedian with nine and a half fingers."

On what he wanted inscribed on his gravestone: "Don't mourn for me now; don't mourn for me never - I'm going to do nothing, for ever and ever."

"I'm an atheist ... thank God."

"If it's sent by ship then it's a cargo, but if it's sent by road, then it's a shipment."

A man goes to heaven, and St Peter shows him around. They go past one room, and the man asks: "Who are all those people in there?" "They are the Methodists," says St Peter. They pass another room, and the man asks the same question. "They are the Anglicans," says St Peter. As they're approaching the next room, St Peter says: "Take your shoes off and tiptoe by as quietly as you can." "Why, who's in there?" asks the man. "The Catholics," says St Peter, "and they think that they're the only ones up here."

"Goodnight, thank you, and may your God go with you."

Just read about this on The Mausoleum.

Very sad.

It was admittedly made for TV, but don't forget the Alan Bennett-scripted, Stephen Frears-directed One Fine Day (1979), in which Allen showed huge promise as a serious actor which he sadly never went on to develop.

Yes I completely agree about his undeveloped acting ability, I remember watching this film and being hugely impressed.

Wonderful comedian I hope suitable tribute is made towards this brilliant man.

RIP Dave....very under rated story teller....should of left us his distictive voice on more projects - the recent Radio 4 programme on him was excellent.

A terrific comedian who used to stick his half finger up to society and all those that governed it.
Became hugely popular in Australia with his 'Dave Allen Tonight' television program in which he was always controversial but so very very funny.
His "Dave Allen at Large' and "Dave Allen Show' were full of classic comic scetches and stories. It would be great to see those shows now repeated.
He'll always be remembered for the great joy he bought to audiences around the world.

After all his famous digs at religion over the years I just wonder how he was greeted at the pearly gates

A sad loss.

Dave.

He has been described as the first alternative comedian;he was certainly funnier than the alternative comedians. We need more like him in this crazy PC world!

For many years, I've bemoaned the fact that none of Dave Allen's shows have been rerun on any of the TV channels; but I read in one of the obituaries the other day that this was due to Dave himself not wanting his stuff to be shown until after he was dead. Does anyone know any more about why he felt like that?

I bought a DVD of some his stuff recently, which I thoroughly enjoyed, but it also saddened me that such a great and unique comedy talent had not been on our TV screens for such a long time.

Dave Allen was certainly a 'one off'... and, as another great comedian once said, "There'll never be another!"
