When new roofs were installed, one of the young men was leaning over the edge of my patio roof tossing debris from the roof. I said, 'Oh, don't worry about that. I'll take care of it.' 'Que?' (Sounded like the 'Oh, he's from Barcelona' response on Fawlty Towers. Then, later, when I had leaks around my air conditioner, the roofer and I had it out. I was at a neighbor's when he climbed down off her roof, after fixing a leak (every time it rains around here, leaks sprout), and heard me talking to her. 'I told you we're not responsible--tell your air-conditioner man!' (Note by me: a damn lot of good that ever did.) 'I was talking to your Mexican about it and--' [through an English-speaker, of course, since my high-school Spanish wouldn't find me the directions to the restroom] 'My Mexican?' 'Well, he couldn't speak English. Or perhaps he's from Honduras.' I no longer make an effort to be politically correct. I told a Pima-Maricopa lady I worked with that I had no intention of referring to her as a 'Native American,' as my ancestors have been here since the 17th century and I was older than she anyway. I added, if she wanted, I could call her tribal American or aboriginal American. Cornelia laughed. 'Indian's fine.' (Columbus was wrong, but every 'Indian' around here seems to accept the misnomer. When I refer to my cardiologist, I always say Dr. Rama's Hindustani, not Indian.) I am on a rant here. And about African-Americans: When Nelson Mandela visited here, many people, who wanted to be politically correct but instead made boobs of themselves, referred to him as 'African-American.' I know this is off the track, somewhat, and I'm not as bigoted as I sometimes sound. I've lived around Mexicans all my life (when I was in the fifth grade, we Anglos were in the minority, which was fine--nobody thought anything about it). But what really gripes me is that they come in, wave their Mexican flags, parade down Central Avenue, Phoenix's main drag, demanding their 'civil rights.' What's that again? I thought civil rights were for legal citizens. Human rights, of course, is something else. My last job, I worked evenings, more or less part time, and a very nice guy quite often saved stuff for me in the office refrigerator for me to munch on throughout the night while I played at working. One time I referred to Hector, in my attempt at political correctness, as 'Hispanic.' 'Hispanic? Hell, I'm Mexican, and we're going to take over this country.' He thought I would accept that as a joke--I didn't. We have a lot of 'La Raza' license plates around here. It seems a far cry from the days when Mexican-Americans, disproportionate to their numbers, were the largest recipients of Congressional Medals of Honor. Now I am concerned about Europe, and the U.K., going Muslim. Perhaps not in our lifetimes, but France already has a large percentage, and they are showing their strength. In Bible study the most interesting guy was a former Muslim, Bob Khan. It takes a lot of courage for a person to turn his back on his family and nation--his family disowned him and Bob said if he ever returned to Saudi Arabia he could be publicly beheaded. I don't think I'd have that much courage--I hope I would, but . . . Anyway, I shall return the track to you. |

anyway back to the main topic of this thread ,that girl runover by the truck is extremely lucky it didnt have an underslung tail lift or similar apperatus . the end result would be too gruesome for tv . also i cant help wondering if the two girls sensing a chance to make a break for it looked the wrong way down the motorway before legging it ? us driving on the left etc .it only takes a split second mistake for such things to occur
