I imagine that Eastenders wins awards because its demographic includes many young people who are prepared to multi-text at premium rates in order to register their approval.
As if anyone else cares for their preferences.

I think it still has something worth saying. 'Beats Corrie any day. However, as a viewer of similar longevity (I have watched since episode 1 as well) I do wonder what it looks like to someone tuning in for the first time.

Not good I expect but you have to 'get into' the stories rather than see it in isolation. However my only real point is not to defend the programme but to defend criticism of its viewers which is a trap so easily fallen into - we're not all idiots but people who share a lot of the same tastes as folk who dislike it intensely.

Since the advent of 24-hour media in this country we have been knee deep in awards. Remember when it was just the BAFTAS? Now there's awards for virtually everything, and a presentation (normally hosted by Jonathan Woss) every week – next thing you know there will be an award for Best Entry This Year on Brit Movies' British Television Forum...."What? Oh, thank you very much, I'm very please to accept. Ta everyone!"

Do you remember Dame Edna accepting an award at home screened at the Award Ceremony and in 'her' own inimical way showed the admiring presenter 'her' awards cupboard and said how useful this one will be to prop the door open so 'she' can see them more?
