I used to like Shoestring it was one of those low budget BBC efforts that people seemed to warm to. No flash car (MkIII Cortina Estate), baggy post punk cheap fashion suit and thin ska style tie almost as skinny as his adolescent moustache; a misfit bucking against authority.

I remember it very well because I was going out with a girl in Southampton and every Sunday night after a Shoestring episode I used to hitchhike back home to North Norfolk, and it used to take me all night! I used to dream of owning a Mk III Cortina Estate back then!

Trevor Eve's more recent crime drama effort Waking the Dead I think it was called, was wooden acting, silly storylines, characterless characters , and his car was too shiny!

Yeah, i agree. Most tv 'light - drama' series' are best when the lead character's not too flash!
Shoestring was scruffy, made mistakes and got 'beaten up' a lot!! and the MkIII Cortina Estate, was a nice touch..
The good thing about Shoestring is, it never got too popular - that's when writers start getting silly...
I remember enjoying the first series of 'Lovejoy' Ian McShane wheeling & dealing in small-time grubby salerooms - then it got popular...Suddenly, 'Superlovejoy' solving crimes & mysteries and jetting off to Venice.... Ho Hum

I didn't see Lovejoy very often but I suspect it was a victim of that the old familiar BBC disease called smugness which crept in and destroyed so many others!

Shoestring series one is due out on DVD in the next month or so IIRC.

Network video, it should be on their website now.

I'll keep an eye out for that release.

I seem to remember that when it finished the follow up replacement series was Bergerac, and despite the idyllic location and more upmarket guest stars I was disappointed in the main characters because they were rather dull. Charlie Hungerford was a good move, but on the whole I thing Shoestring was a better series.

Buyer beware Sam -

Check it out first. Being set in a radio station there were (obviously) a lot of music cues. I know ages ago they said they'd have trouble with the cues for a show like SHOESTRING, so there may be some amendments/trims.

Forewarned is forearmed, as they say...

Well I held off buying the Thriller series because of faulty discs so I won't get round to looking at buying Shoestring for quite a while anyway, people will say on here if its's good or bad (another Christmas list item). It's like new models of cars and software, I never buy the first production run or software release until months later when they've ironed the faults/bugs out!

I have tracked down UKTV Drama's proposed transmission date for the repeat broadcast of the "Find The Lady" episode of "Shoestring". According to the web page I found the broadcast will be on Wednesday August 17th at 5.00 pm and again at 5.00 am the next morning. It is of course illegal for you to record the programme for other fans of Toyah Willcox and/or Trevor Eve

If you want to look at UK TV's preview text along with the whole day's schedule it's on a PDF file at the address below (you will be asked to open or save it and it is safe to do that. If you dont have PDF reader you will need to download that first). You need to scroll down to page 36 when the document opens.

I think Shoestring must have been the first TV detective to be named after the show's budget!
