Just to get really picky - and this has been said elsewhere in Britmovie, but I am nothing if not repetitive - "hello" wasn't a greeting some decades back - it was a sort of exclamation, as in "Hello! What's that?" Greetings come and greetings go - it's just a shame that "hiya/hiyah" seems to have been around far longer than it deserves.

(I must have missed this discussion back in August!!)

There was a Scottish version of Hello magazine for a brief period concerning local celebrities a couple of years ago.

It was called "HIYA" [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif[/img]

It didn't last very long.

Hi Diane,

You've reminded me of that great British actor Nigel Bruce. As Dr.Watson he would quite often exclaim "Hello!" to clues discovered with Basil Rathbone's character Sherlock Holmes in those wonderful old films.

Yes, one of Watson's favourites! Apparently "Hello!" as an exclamation of surprise originated in the 18th C, and I've seen it in other earlier stories. Still, that's all neither here nor there ....
