I recall this series going out on a Monday night sometime around 1961-63 about a fictional department store in London's West End.

It went out live and had some well known and not so well know actors such as Norman Bowler, Graham Crowden and Wendy Richard. I wonder if Wendy Richard ever thought that years later she would be in another fictional department store?

I was 14 when it was first shown and it made my Monday as I really looked forward to watching it. I can still hum the theme tune, so it must have been good?

If you go to the movies enjoy your film and please take your litter away with you

I only know of Harpers from what I've read, but I just had to pop in and say that's one cool avatar and moniker !

Thanks for the comments regarding the Avatar, it is as you've no doubt guessed Edward Judd who played Peter Stenning in "The Day the Earth Caught Fire". My second choice would have been Bill Mguire also from the same film who was played Leo McKern.

I used to watch 'Harpers West One' it is remembered now for a fictional pop singer who opened the record department and he was played by actor John Leyton who recorded 'Johnny Remember Me' which he sang on the program, a week later the record was number one in the pop charts, such was the power of television back then with eighteen million viewers for this program.

Default Johnny Remember Me

Can I just make a slight correction to what has been said.
John Leyton played a character called “Johnny St, Cyr – sincere – get it?” and his manager Robert Stigwood had arranged for the song to be (mimed to) on the show and had the record released and in stores that Friday. It took 4 weeks to make it to number one (as shown) but of course, without the Harpers plug it would have not made such an impact.

JOHNNY REMEMBER ME 2.29 / THERE MUST BE (TOP RANK)
Featuring Lissa Gray and The Outlaws
Writer : Geoff Goddard
Producer : Joe Meek
Entered 02 August 1961 for 12 weeks. Chart Action ;
12 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 2 - 1 - 5 – 13 - 24

I have never seen this programme because it was before my time, but I would like to see it. I hope it becomes available on dvd. However, I do have a copy of John Leyton's Johnny Remember Me on a 1960's compilation cd and I like the song.
