I used to watch 'Harpers West One' it is remembered now for a fictional pop singer who opened the record department and he was played by actor John Leyton who recorded 'Johnny Remember Me' which he sang on the program, a week later the record was number one in the pop charts, such was the power of television back then with eighteen million viewers for this program.

Can I just make a slight correction to what has been said.
John Leyton played a character called “Johnny St, Cyr – sincere – get it?” and his manager Robert Stigwood had arranged for the song to be (mimed to) on the show and had the record released and in stores that Friday. It took 4 weeks to make it to number one (as shown) but of course, without the Harpers plug it would have not made such an impact. JOHNNY REMEMBER ME 2.29 / THERE MUST BE (TOP RANK) Featuring Lissa Gray and The Outlaws Writer : Geoff Goddard Producer : Joe Meek Entered 02 August 1961 for 12 weeks. Chart Action ; 12 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 2 - 1 - 5 – 13 - 24 |
