I've never seen this before but I've heard so many people praise it that I'm very pleased to see that ITV3 are re-running it along with another classic of the time, the name of which escapes me, but it's set in India. Is it The Far Pavilions or something?

So the repeats schedule on ITV3 looks pretty good this autumn compared with the new terrestrial offerings.

Brideshead Revisited was largley filmed on the North Yorkshire estate of Castle Howard, the home of the Howard family. My father, who was in the Boys Brigade, spent some summers in the 1930's camping on the estate and soon became pally with George Howard (the future chairman of the BBC),who often mingled in with the activities of the Boys Brigade.
Castle Howard,if you are in ever the vicinity,is well worth the visit:the grounds are vast, the building is magnificent. Designed by John Vanbrugh - a man of dramatic ideas, but with no previous architectural experience - and commissioned by the Earl of Carlisle in 1692,it is still one of the finest stately homes in Britain.
To get there, follow the A170 Thirsk/Scarborough road and there should be the brown heritage signs for Castle Howard.

Itv3 is pretty good at picking some good watchable reruns, i just wish they would lose the large 'dog' in the screen corner...and the resolution/aspect ratio keeps changing on my setup....

I find it very annoying having any sort of logo on the screen because I keep looking at it! TV stations never used to do it, so why is it so important now? I know what channel I'm watching so I don't need to be subliminally reminded all the time!

You wouldn't buy a book and expect to see the publisher's details printed on the top left corner of every page!

Apparently, it is so that we know which channel we are watching - ideal for those with the attention span of a gnat.

Drives me to distraction and is one reason why I watch very little now - another is that the overwhelming majority is complete rubbish that would insult the intelligence of the aforementioned gnat.

Methinks JW has the right idea

I saw this for the first time recently. Overall, an excellent series but rather too padded with ponderous moments - over the top for a relatively slim novel.

It would be trimmed considerably these days - probably too much the other way.

An otherwise superb cast are let down by Olivier who appeared to have forgotten that he WASN'T supposed to be doing one of his "accents" in this one. John Gielgud on the other hand was hillarious.

A treat for the eyes and the intellect but could have stood some editing.

I thought Olivier was great as Lord Marchmain .... but why did he have to take so long to die!

Gielgud was fantastic, probably the pick of all the fine performances in the series.

In the new version Mr Ryder is to be played by Patrick Malahide and Lord Marchmain by Michael Gambon. The running time is predicted at being under two hours so it should be different enough to warrant a look.

"Brideshead Revisited" is my favourite novel - I suppose I have pretty much the same view of life as Evelyn Waugh.

I enjoyed the TV series, but I agree that it was far too long. On the other hand, two hours seems far too short for a complex and multi-layered story.

What got rather lost in the series, and what most reviewers perhaps didn't realise, is that the story isn't really fiction at all - this is Evelyn Waugh's autobiography, lightly rewritten. "My theme is memory", the narrator says at one point, and that's what any adaptation should be - fragments of memory.

I really can't see Michael Gambon as Lord Marchmain ! In no way could Gambon be an aristocrat !

I have a sort of fantasy that one day I could make my own screen adaptation of this stunning story - it would rely more on images and less on narration, than the TV series. I reckon six hour-long episodes would be about right.

I saw a documentary on the making of the series, and the producer admitted that when he first viewed the complete footage he thought "My God - is anyone going to sit through all this ???"

I suppose it had to be in 13 ( ? ) episodes because that is the minimum American broadcasters would accept in their schedules.
