Congrats on your 300th Joe. All excellent choices.

My choice...Coronation Street from the 60's thru to the late 90's. Originally written as just a gritty drama series that would last a few months, it spiralled into the enigma it is now. The brilliant casts from the early days can never and will be equalled. Many of those actors were rarely heard of until they hit "The Street" and went onto stradom in thier own rights.

I'll add my vote to those being collected for Jekyll. Superb drama, great performances from a brilliant script by one of the best writers around at the the moment, Steven Moffat

And yes, Sweeney Todd with Ray Winstone was very good as well. Good job he didn't start singing like in this latest Tim Burton version

C'mon then. Name me a series which tops "The Sweeney" Like many people I first caught the Sweeney in the 70's when I was a nipper. Most people think of the sweeney as being all about blaggers robbing banks. This is not the case as "The Sweeney" dealt with serious issues of the day which are still relevent today. C'mon then yer slags!!! If you know of a series which your think tops "The Sweeney" then let's not be shy. Let's have yer...get yer trousers on, yer nicked!!!
You should watch the US show "the Wire"
I think it is the best crime drama series ever

Some drama series that I don't think have been mentioned so far:-
1977 Who Pays the Ferryman
1985 Connie
1995 Kavanagh QC
2002 Foyles War
So difficult to pick a single drama series as the best ever made!

If I was to pick short series, rather than on going / seasonal types of series like most of those mentioned above, I would say:

HOLDING ON

OUR FRIENDS IN THE NORTH

For writing, acting and realism, are leagues above almost anything else ever made (In my opinion of course)

Our Friends was ambitious but I'm not sure if it might not have been better had they narrowed the timescale and tightened it up a bit.

One I watched religiously was When the Boat Come In, but like many drama's that too trailed off once Bolam managed a bit of social-climbing.

I've recently been pondering this question - the best Drama series.
There are a lot of really good ones - engaging, quite watchable, such as The Survivors, The day of the Triffids, the Andromeda series Quartermass - and the other lost drams of the 50 and 60 - such as Spycatcher, and monn Saquadron. Also, colditz, Secret Army - and fourth Arm (Has anyone a copy of that?)
But for my money the top ones are:
I, Caludius
Edge of Darkness
Sandbaggers
Callan

In that order.

BTW: is there a specific threat one posts queries to concerning copies of old series?

If you're looking for a copy of a show then there's Looking for a Video/DVD (TV)

For anything else, if you're asking questions about a show or just want to comment on one, then start a new threat ( or even a new thread) in this British Television area
