Default Film Buff of the Year

Does anyone remember the panel quiz show with host Robin Ray called "Film Buff of the Year " early eighties BBC 2? ,slightly highbrow and too difficult for me but fun all the same.
Anyone remember the show?
Why cant we have quiz shows like this now?

I would guess that someone on this forum may have been a contestant based on the knowledge here ,am I correct?

I remember applying for that one,but the questions they sent me (to try out my knowledge without reference books) went straight over my head. I might do better now. I did succeed on getting on Screen Test,a BBC Radio 4 programme hosted by Brian Sibley. I got to the semi finals.

I have a very vague memory of it. Probably far too intellectual and esoteric for today's mainstream audience - they'd be hard-pressed to understand the first adjective, let alone the second

The worst of it is, any attempt to broadcast something similar today would be buried so deep in the schedules, I'd certainly miss it - unless someone here gave a heads up.

I do remember it but most of the questions were quite difficult, and I used to get more right in University Challenge, and even more now ( they're thinking of renaming it Universally Challenged because the only questions the students seem to get right are on soaps, pop music and celebrities)!

My favourites were Family Fortunes and Bullseye and it would give me a tremendous amount of satisfaction to realise that there were some people in this country who were even more stupid than me!

Perhaps someone in the forum could write to the BBC and suggest that Film Buff of the Year be resurrected. FELL could have his specialist subject as Jenny Agutter, but they'd have to rename the quiz In the Buff in Films Her Career

Good one - I thought you were going to say the only thing they could get right was their name.

Be interesting to see a couple of programmes from 30 or more years ago to see how they faired then. We might get a shock, but only a minor one - more of a tremor than an earthquake.

I don't think I ever saw FF - though the name rings a bell. Always hated Bullseye and avoided it whenever possible.

I think I'm getting a bit of a tarnished reputation here

However, I did once get more questions right [all of them] in a specialist round than the actual contestant on MM - and, before you ask, no it wasn't!!

The odd time I've seen NMTB, I've been amazed at the banality of it. Strikes me as a bit odd when team members can't get right questions on "stuff" they've supposedly recorded.

FELL [who is obviously not very impressed with the latest quizzes]

I've noticed that all the "comedy"quizzes are based on the style of Have I Got News For You, which itself was based on Radio 4's The News Quiz which ironically, due to a script reading unfunny chairman in Simon Hoggart, and a guest list where natural wit is not exactly their best attribute, is now probably the least funny of the lot of them!

The most bearable of this ilk is QI with Stephen Fry, apart from that annoying curly haired big girl's blouse who sounds like a perpetual lower sixth former, Alan Davies!

To be honest this "new" style of quiz is rather old hat and time to bin the lot of them!

I agree, QI is one of the "most interesting" shows around at the moment.
Do you not think that Alan Davies might be acting thicker than he really is?

New series starts Friday of next week (30th)

I realise that he's not stupid, but I just don't see the point of having him on as a resident stooge. There are loads of more interesting people who could be on it, and his childishness detracts from what is often a pretty good show! I suppose they could have four different people on every week which would be better, but I think having Stephen Fry hosting it makes it very worthwhile viewing anyway!!
