When The Boat Comes In (1975-1981) is one of my all-time favourite drama-series … with, I think, some of the finest dialogue ever written in television drama. James Mitchell’s script-writing is sublime …

I recently checked the DVDs and each episode runs at approx. 48 minutes … so hopefully Yesterday shouldn’t cut too much … although some cutting was very evident on the railway station shoot-out climax in the Paddy Boyle’s Discharge episode.

I think Empire Day on the Slag Heap by James Mitchell is one of the best episodes of the entire series … where Bill Seaton has his devastating mining accident … Jack Ford intervenes and saves him from signing a low compensation document ... admitting Bill's responsibility and liability for the accident … Jack verbally destroys the mine-owners rep in the hospital and the lazy union rep in the pub … Jack learning (from Matt) of Dolly’s pregnancy … and telling Jessie directly, almost brutally, that their marriage was off … this was a master-class in razor-sharp script writing of the very highest quality ...

The episode contains a series brilliantly ferocious speeches and dialogue exchanges delivered with incredible clarity, pace and panache by James Bolam … and ended with such sad poignancy with Jessie sobbing uncontrollably over her lost love.

The latest episode, Whatever Made You Think The War Was Over? (James Mitchell) … ended in a shockingly sensational manner … with a very drunk Bella being gently kissed by Jack ... with Arthur catching them …
‘What the devil …’

Jack explains (with Bella now crying in shame) that she is as ‘drunk as a Lord … or maybe that should be a Lady …’
Superb writing.

I was very saddened to read that Edward Wilson (Dr Billy Seaton) had died on 2nd February 2008 of cancer aged just 60 … he appeared in 35 episodes of When The Boat Come In (1975-1981) … and was the hugely enthusiastic Artistic Director of the English National Youth Theatre from 1987-2003 and had taught and encouraged such talents as Daniel Craig and Orlando Bloom. Edward … who was a contemporary of Timothy Dalton at the National Youth Theatre … was a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. RIP Edward.

I remember hearing that the excellent actor John Nightingale (Tom Seaton) had died very suddenly of a heart attack in, I think, 1980, aged just 37 … he had just completed filming When the Boat Comes In and was probably due to feature in the 4th and final series. RIP John.

I agree wholeheartedly with your comments mrs emma peel. But for me the best thing about it is Jean Heywoods acting. She first came to notice to me in this series. Ever since whenever she has been in something she steals every scene. She is an actress par excellence.

I never knew that, that is a shock even now all these years later. I always thought it strange ( & the only serious flaw in the entire series storyline) that he never looked up the Seatons after he found out about Matt, as he'd always looked after them, even though he was ruthless with everybody else, (even them at times, but he still looked out for them) especially as he was strapped for cash & was technically a partner in Bill Seaton's empire of shops & ( I think) Tom's nursery business.

No offence taken Hughj, ( & apologies for not replying earlier, but I haven't been online for some time) I don't know why he did the last series, or if I ever did I forgot.

I do wonder if he had any input into the ending though.

The last episode was the best of the 4th series, by far.

Virtually the whole cast were magnificent in this terrific series...possibly my favourite drama from the last 35 years of British TV. James Garbutt who played Bill Seaton was outstanding I thought. The way Bolam's character switched from rubbing shoulders with Matt Headley and the Seatons to mixing with the hoy polloy was brilliant. I particularly enjoyed the machiavellian wheeler dealing with the Horry Manners character (another sublime performance, this time from Basil Henson).

Spoiler

With a ring like that I could...dare I say it...rule the world!
