In threads like this my default answer is The Avengers, but I wanted to post a really good theme tune to a show I didn't particulary watch.

An odd take on one of my American favourites

While we're on this subject, and talking of things that thrill you back to your TV watching days as a ten year old, can I just put a mention in for that "suspense" note that always opens old-fashioned sitcoms?
What I mean is, the theme tune at the start of the programme always chugs away as the titles roll, then, just as the titles dissolve into that opening shot of the front door or the kitchen table, the music resolves into a sort of half-way, minor note that indicates that the story is about to begin. Such as here ... (You can stick around for the rest of the episode, too, but try to concentrate on that last note at 00:32...)

There must be a musician on here who can explain to me what is being done there? Why does it 'set up' rather than conclude? It wouldn't fit at the end of a programme ... but why not?

UFO was the first programme I always made sure I never missed. I can still recall at the end of the final episode the announcer calming saying 'that was the last in the series' as if it didn't really matter.

Gerry Anderson's TV offerings were a "must watch" for me as they were always of the highest quality due to the effort he put into them, he never did anything half-hearted & gave his all in all he did. UFO was no exception & showed that the master of supermarionation could also evolve into "live action" shows seamlessly with no loss in drama or quality.

UFO had well written stories and although at the end of each episode the heroes were victorious they usually ended on a dark note.
No matter what S.H.A.D.O.W. would do the Aliens were never defeated and were always a threat to humanity (which always kept me watching every week and hoping that the next episode would give mankind an upper hand.)

An American show that had a similar tone to it and always ended on a dark note was "The Invaders" by Quinn Martin

The words 'a Quinn Martin production' are forever burned into my brain.

Do you recall the episode of UFO when they managed to follow one of the spacecraft back to take photos of the home world? Only to realise they'd screwed up because they had no way of telling scale. I think my favourite episode was the one where Foster was kidnapped by the aliens.

Two very mid-70s themes..

Looking for Clancy (of which sadly there doesn't appear to be a clip on the net) and

Yes I remember the episode (quite good and frustrating at the end when the photos turned out to be worthless)

I believe the episode I like the best is where Foster is stranded on the moon and becomes friends with an alien and they both work together to survive..

Below is an interesting link about a potential UFO film..

Exclusive: Gerry Anderson on the UFO movie - Den of Geek

That is my second favourite. But then there were lots of great ones - remember the one where a SHADO infiltrator can stop time?
