Oh yes, I'm so connected to the great and good! My other "celebrity" namedrop is Helena B-C - I have a nice story about her which I witnessed first hand a few years ago (not one of yer eight degrees of separation-type stories) but as she can afford expensive solicitors, that'll have to wait until we have a forum drink up! Did I mention that I was Mollie Sugden's bridesmaid!

So proud of their North Eastern origins that they live in Chiswick. Didn't Jim Broadbent play a similar character in an episode of Victoria Wood once? Ah well, life imitiates art and all that.

I don't personally see why everyone thought Merton's takes on Hancock were so bad, except maybe that they were reviled without even being watched properly by the type of self- appointed snobby arses who think that just because somebody's dead their work is sacrosanct. Not that anyone on this site falls into that category by the way, but there was a lot of it about at the time. After all, he didn't just do Hancock- he did 'SWALK' and 'Impasse' and several other Galton and Simpson scripts, and seemed to bring something to all of them. And who else but Merton (apart from Hywel Bennett, who had already started doing his Mr Creosote impression by this point) had the hangdog features and deadpan delivery required to play such a part? For me, it was the role he was born for- like Stephen Fry as Wilde.

I disagree.

I have been a fan of Paul Merton's work from the early 80's.

His shows on channel 4 as well as his various appearances as a panellist are excellent. His ability to take a comic idea and run-with-it touches on the genius sometimes but the Hancock role required something different altogether....a comic actor.

It was a brave attempt and he obviously had a great love of the scripts but (unfortunately) acting is not his forte.

Having said that, he does have improvisational skills that many actors would kill for.

It would be interesting to see just how many people bother watching terrestrial TV these days. Apart from the types of people addicted to nightly soaps, I don't believe that anyone is really interested in seeing the likes of Ant and Dec in any capacity! If there was an honest viewing survey carried out I am guessing that the directors of ITV and BBC would be so stunned at the results they would be forced to resign!

Depends what you mean by honest - far too many people appear to be addicted to the mindless pap that passes for entertainment today.

I can't think of any terrestrial programmes I watch on a regular "must see" basis, not one! The Freeview channels now seem to be my first choice for old cop and drama shows etc. and I've cancelled my cable subscription because I hardly ever watched any of those channels!

I very rarely bother with television - would much rather watch a dvd. I should clarify that it is not simply Jenny Agutter films but also PnP, Ealing comedies and a few others.

I agree wholeheartedly - although I do watch (when I remember they're on) the ITV4 output between 6 and 7pm

My main problem with Twat and Dick, sorry, I me Wank and Duck......er...no Ant and Dec, is that they are so far up their own arses, they actually believe they're funny.

Next year they're going to do the The Queen's Christmas Speech because she's been hosting it for far too long now, so to boost the ratings they need these young, bright, and talented individuals to stop her viewing figures being trounced again by Eastenders!

In fact ITV could dedicate a whole channel to them called AND, where they present, act and guest in every single programme, and read the news, do the weather forecast and appear in the adverts!
