So proud of their North Eastern origins that they live in Chiswick. Didn't Jim Broadbent play a similar character in an episode of Victoria Wood once? Ah well, life imitiates art and all that.
I don't personally see why everyone thought Merton's takes on Hancock were so bad, except maybe that they were reviled without even being watched properly by the type of self- appointed snobby arses who think that just because somebody's dead their work is sacrosanct. Not that anyone on this site falls into that category by the way, but there was a lot of it about at the time. After all, he didn't just do Hancock- he did 'SWALK' and 'Impasse' and several other Galton and Simpson scripts, and seemed to bring something to all of them. And who else but Merton (apart from Hywel Bennett, who had already started doing his Mr Creosote impression by this point) had the hangdog features and deadpan delivery required to play such a part? For me, it was the role he was born for- like Stephen Fry as Wilde.

I disagree.
I have been a fan of Paul Merton's work from the early 80's. His shows on channel 4 as well as his various appearances as a panellist are excellent. His ability to take a comic idea and run-with-it touches on the genius sometimes but the Hancock role required something different altogether....a comic actor. It was a brave attempt and he obviously had a great love of the scripts but (unfortunately) acting is not his forte. Having said that, he does have improvisational skills that many actors would kill for. In fact ITV could dedicate a whole channel to them called AND, where they present, act and guest in every single programme, and read the news, do the weather forecast and appear in the adverts!
