MASH was one of my all time favourite programmes and I wish I had the money topay for the complete series on DVD (and the time to watch it). However, the edge of the early programmes seemed lost when Alan Alda had some say in the making of future programes and that was the reason why Wayne Rogers (Trapper John) left the programme becuase he knew it would become "An Alan Alda" programme. As much as I liked it,it went on too long and sentiment came in the end, jettisoning the satire of the original film and the first few series. I like Harry Morgan, but he was too paternal, rather than the "don't give a ****" attitude of Colonel Blake.
Going back to canned laughter,I always thought it was a cue for tv audiences to laugh.
Ricky Gervais was doing a similair thing when he took over the Jonathan Ross slot on BBC Radio 2 over Christmas. He was laughing so much at his co-presenter's comments,it was as such as if he was telling the listener "He has said something funny - laugh!". Well, thanks for the tip,Ricky - because neither you or him were funny."
