I was fortunate enough to receive the Sharpe complete series on DVD at Christmas and I’d not seen many episodes before, and I find it very entertaining indeed. A lot a people on here criticise the acting ability of ex-welder Sean Bean, but in this role where he’s been made up to an officer from the ranks it worked very well. Sharpe struggles to deal with his senior "gentlemen" officers and become accepted by them, or at least credible to them as an officer (many of whom were played by well respected and established actors from the old school), so life was very much imitating art. I think Sean Bean played the part very well indeed, and in my book he's a very good actor. As were the rest of the cast, rock solid performances from everybody! The locations and music were excellent as well!
The best character I’ve seen so far is that of Pete Postlewaite playing the demented Sergeant Obediah Hakeswell, Sharpe’s nemesis. The way he talks into his hat to his mother, mumbling his feelings of sexual frustration to her before changing his expression to an evil leer and straining his neck, rolling his eyes and shuddering before strutting off to make someone’s life a misery is absolutely brilliant. When he does something evil and fears discovery his face changes to that of a worried child looking around furtively in case some angry adult has spotted his misdeed.
