But good though the programme was, it can't beat Murder By Decree, a 1979 British-Canadian co-production. Starring Christopher Plummer and James Mason as Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson, it had everything: interesting theory (same killer i.e. William Gull, but renamed, and Masonic intrigue) beautiful, cinematography, haunting music and authentic sets. Frank Finlay played Inspector Lestrade in this AND A Study In Terror, a 60s Sherlock Holmes-meets Jack the Ripper film, and the late Anthony Quale appeared in both, albeit as different characters. |
