I've got the audio cassettes of Kenneth Williams doing Wind in the Willows and it's terrific stuff.

There is a tendency for each generation to produce almost carbon copies of actors and comedians from the previous generation, and I always tend to think of Stephen Fry as the new Kenneth Williams, and has possibly shared similar frustrations in his own personal life.

Oh the luxury of being able to sit at home bobbing around the swimming pool in one of those infaltable swimming pool armchairs with a G&T, wrestling with one's fears and doubts. To not enjoy the extended holidays in exotic locations, and endless wealth because one's feelings of unfulfilment and unrequited love have driven you into a frenzy of hand-wringing, foot stamping and object throwing, questioning the pointlessness of your very existence!

The rest of us never have such problems of course, we're too knackered as we fall out our pits at 05:45 every morning to feed the cat and then drive to work amongst an endless stream of droopy-eyed drivers to arrive at jobs we all loathe. The only fulfilment we need is to remain in paid employment for at least the rest of the day and to make it safely home in time for Eastenders and a cup of cocoa, before hitting the sack to dream of how things might have been had you been talented! I've never heard Kenneth williams reading "Wind in the willows" that must be good to listen to?

I wonder if they're is any available to buy?

is at the BBC4 tv website:

I was just checking to see what is available for 'Kenneth Williams' on Amazon.co.uk, and I noticed that, amazingly, three of his stage revues
with Fenella Fielding, Sheila Hancock etc., mentioned in part one of the BBC4 documentary have been issued on CD...
These are SHARE MY LETTUCE (import from US) , PIECES OF EIGHT and ONE OVER THE EIGHT

Fantabulosa!

A very good performance by Michael Sheen as Kenneth Williams, but I really cannot believe his life really was as miserable as this, surely he would have done away with himself much earlier had it been the case? The programme told us nothing new about his life, than for example the two part “Reputations” documentary that was shown on the same night though did it? I really don’t believe one can assume so much from reading someone’s diary, even those as meticulous as Williams obviously were. Another piece of interesting television from BBC4 which seems to be like BBC2 was some years ago now.

Read the diaries. They're pretty eye-opening.

they were. He seemed to be not happy with his life as a star in the carry on movies etc...
he seemed to have a rocky relationship with his dad.

he was more closer to mum

There was a good gag in KW Fantabulosa when his mother said there had been another lesbian restaurant opened locally to which Williams replied:

"Lebanese you silly old cow!"

One error was when KW was getting his bottom examined and the doctor told him that he had a spastic colon. KW replied "You make it sound like I've won The Lottery!" The Lottery didn't start until 1994, which was a few years after KW's death.

But did he say it with capital letters?
There were lotteries before The Lottery.

But in the UK we all talked about winning the football pools pre-lottery.

If you don't mind waiting a week or so I'll send it you after I copy it on to mini-disc, or do cassette copies if I can't transfer it . PM me with your address details if I can be of help.
