I believe the Beeb has constraints in its charter regarding the number of repeats it can air; also repeat fees for 'prestige shows' are VERY expensive. I remember reading back in the early 90s the BBC was having a good old moan about the cost of repeating Steptoe and Son - a half hour comedy repeat meant a payment of £10k per episode to Harry H Corbett's widow. Add everyone else's costs and you start to appreciate the figures involved, and that was I reckon 15 years ago. So, with a daytime budget of £10k-£40k it is impossible to repeat anything decent.

I, like probably everyone else on this forum, would like to see more daytime movies. But I think that too would fall foul due to cost and charter restrictions.

Following on from that, I did a search and came up with:

Haven't taken a close look yet but, given comments have to be in by end of April, thought it worth giving others a heads up now.

Trouble is that charter is just a 'guideline' and not concrete rules so the BBC can continue bending them to suit their schedule and commercial desires.

Thanks for that.

I read Private Eye regularly. The changes the magazine reports that have been wrought upon the Beeb by John Birt and his successors would be laughable if they weren't so tragic. Not just in terms of the output of drama and light entertainment but where - arguably - it matters most: news and current affairs.

Check out the BBC News homepage "Have Your Say" section to see how many foreign people use the Beeb to get decent news coverage. So it's worth fighting for.

End of political rant.

Alan Plater was on Radio 2 this morning's Parkinson show. He mentioned the Afternoon Play series which the BBC showed a few months ago. It featured his play 'The Last Will And Testament of Billy Two Sheds'.The full interview can be heard on Listen Again (60 mins in) but he did say that the series was simply done the old way, two cameras and a week to complete, which made it economical. Could be an ideal vehicle for new talent.

What on earth is he doing going on You and Yours, the most pointless programme on an otherwise wonderful station? Y&Y is just a consumer show and every episode could be done in under a minute by saying caveat emptor. Instead they drag it out to an hour of self-congratulation.
