A friend recalls watching a short light drama series (no idea which channel) which
ran once (maybe 6 episodes) in the mid-1990s. It was set in a small village
somewhere in the rural mid-North of England - Derbyshire, Peak District,
Cumbria, Yorkshire Moors, Pennines, that sort of area - and was ever-so-slightly
fantasy-themed, in the same manner as HAMISH MACBETH.

The lead character, if there was one, was a police sergeant stationed in the
village. There was no real focus on 'crime' as such, simply on the unusual
personal interactions of the locals, some of which engaged the attention of the
policeman as a sort of moderator and interlocutor.

Any ideas what this series was?

Sounds alot like Hunters Walk (see previous topic) but that was the 1970s and ran for alot longer.
Could your friend's mind be playing tricks?
Another alternative could be Rockliffe's Folly (1988) which was a follow up series to Rockliffe's Babies. Not sure where it was set but it was out in the country as opposed to the urban setting of Rockliffe's Babies. Starred Ian Hogg as Det Sgt Rockliffe.

Thanks for the responses but it was none of these. Even my friend's wife can't recall the series and he claims she was sitting next to him while he watched it.

If it wasn't for the mid-90's insistance, I would have suggested Parkin's Patch which I saw on Granada in the 70's. It was set in the Yorkshire Dales and the copper patrolled his beat in a old Land-Rover accompanied with his trusty dog. It didn't run for long but was a pleasing diversion in it's own way.
