No comments about the new series of Dr Who?

They do seem to be maintaining the standard, of stories as well as special effects. I think that David Tennant is doing it very well and that tonight's episode The Girl in the Fireplace was very good. But I do like the writing of Steven Moffat (Press Gang, Coupling and the Empty Child episode in the last series)

I was snatching glimpses at work...will see it properly tomorrow....but the automaton monsters were straight out of one of my favourite silent films; a 1927 French-made film set in 18th C Poland called The Chess Player which apparently Moffatt referenced in 'Confidential'...thus two of my passions combine most unexpectedly.
Where was that site that had a spoof Doctor Who filmography back to the 1930's...where he was played by Roger Livesey???

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

Don't know that one, but it sounds good. Roger would have been a great Doctor.

Found it...it was on an Dr Who fanfic newsgroup...I misremembered it; Livesey took over in the fifties....in the thirties it was Claude Rains, with Leslie Banks as The Master....and Alistair Sim in the forties.

Been very impressed with Tennant and the stories are maintaining the strength of the previous series so all-in-all it's a very entertaining 30 minutes. I fell out of love with the franchise circa Baker and McCoy but they now seem to have succesfully modernised it without selling out.

Just hope the BBC don't milk it dry now and only green-light production if the storylines are strong enough.

I used to watch Dr Who religiously as a child and as a teenager. But I haven't seen much of the new stuff, so I can't really comment on it.

But if you were to ask me what the best ever story was, I'd have to say...Tom Baker's The Ribos Operation, which was the first installment of the "Key To Time" cycle.

fantastic stuff

Only an entertaining 30 minutes - in a 45 minute show?

I preferred the low budget Dr Who of yesteryear, and IMWO this business about going back in time to see famous people like Queen Victoria, Charles Dickens etc is just a load of old squit!

The new Dr Who (Ecclestone & Tennet) is great telly, which doesn't necessarily mean great Dr Who, but this is coming from a Dr Who fan! As a fan, one thing stood out as being particularly pathetic and that was when he got knighted by jolly Queen Vic as 'Sir Dr of Tardis' . A trite piece of writing that ruined what was up till then an enjoyable piece of hokum.

Yes, the next thing you know they'll be going back to see Marco Polo, the Aztecs, Robespierre, Nero etc.
Oh no, they've already done all of those - with William Hartnell as the Doctor.

When I heard they were bringing back Dr Who,I wasn't that concerned becuase I was not a great fan of the old programmes (apart from when Sarah Jane Smith was in it). However,I must admit I do like the new programmes and prefer them to the old low budget ones.

The new series has not been sighted in Australia as yet.
I see though that Dr.Who won a major award at the BAFTA's Television awards in London last night.
At first David Tennant seemed a surprise choice but after looking at a few highlights of the new series on Sky yesterday I must say he seems to really suit the part.
Looking forward to seeing him in action.

Dave.

If theres one thing that is a little annoying is that some of the comedy is flat ( the " we are not amused " running Gag ) .

The BBC have to be applauded for making it mainstream without losing too much of the fantasy element. Plus I can imagine it throws a scare into some kids , which it always did ( the Autons coming out of a shop window -in the Pertwee era for me! )

Plus another generation of young lads can lust after the assistant ( I was torn between feisty Sarah Jane and Warrior-Woman Leela :) ) I gather that David Tennant has some admirers too , so everyones happy.

Couldn't You just try acting , Old Boy...It's so much easier

Doctor Who just does not cut it anymore, especially once you have seen Beethoven hammering out Ode to Joy on synthesizers.
