Thumbs up

Does anyone know if the television series of Bill Bryson's Notes From A Small Island is available in DVD yet?

Hi Marky,
It's been available for a couple of years now. I rented it off Tesco last year.
There is a new copy for £10.75 on eBay, post free and there are also plenty of new and used copies on Amazon, so I should imagine it is available from other suppliers as well.

Does anybody know why Bryson moved back to America?

His wife is British and his children are born and bred here, so for them it would have been a bit of an upheaval.

By the way, I've read some of Bryson's other stuff and he's really rather good

I think he wanted to show his children of the lifestyle in America - or as he put it:"After nearly two decades in Britain,I took the decision to move back to the States for a while,to let my kids experience life in another country,to give the wife to chance to shop until 10.00pm,seven days a week, and most of all,I read that 3.7 million Americans believed that they had been abducted by aliens at one time or another, and it was clear to me,that my people needed me" .
He has now returned to Britain,I believe living in London (before,he lived in Skipton,North Yorkshire) and he has been made Chancellor of Durham University, where he can enjoy his favourite building in the world - Durham Cathedral.

Cheers for that

I think it's interesting how some Americans adore this country - some of them choosing to live here - whilst others are indifferent.

I think that would make a fascinating TV programme: especially if it featured Americans who lived in places other than London, Like Bryson used to do.
