Perhaps not known throughout the country, but Mike Neville - Britain's longest serving daily television presenter - announced today he is quitting, after being from work for nearly a year. Mike,69,first started on Tyne Tees Television in 1962,appearing as "daft policeman",then was offered a job as news presenter. He then left TTTV to work on the BBC's local news slot Look North and remained there for thirty two years, making him the longest serving news presenter on the BBC network. Whilst at the BBC,he presented wide range of programmes, including a stint on Nationwide,in which I believe he was offered a chance to be a main presenter, but turned it down as he did not want to leave his beloved north east. He also presented Geordierama,a comedy show with fellow Look North presenter,George House as well as Heroes, where local famous people (Brian Clough,Eric Burdon etc) picked out there heroes from over the years. In 1996,he returned to Tyne Tees, where he was the anchorman for the local news until he fell ill last July, due to a life threatening blood clot in his leg.
Thankfully,he is on the mend, but has to take twenty pills a day, which makes him drowsy.
He will be missed I am sure for not only being an excellent and professional newscaster, but for his sense of humour which oozed in the lighter side of the news programme.
Mike,on behalf of everyone in the north east - thank you and take care.
