Default New Tricks

I finally got to see the last episode this week and I wonder if it was another 'in' joke with Denis Waterman. A girl appeared who thought she was his daughter, she pulled out a photograph and he remembered her mother's name.... Patricia Driscoll. Were they an item long ago? According to IMDb they never worked together.

On another note I hope James Bolam isn't leaving the series, the last episode seemed to leave it hanging in the balance.

regards
Freddy

You're not confusing Patricia Driscoll with Patricia Maynard are you?? Miss Maynard was Mrs Waterman, mother of Hannah...

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

Thanks for the quick reply Penfold.
My friend who lent me the video mentioned it as well and the name Maynard would not have clicked the grey matter.

best wishes

The other in joke in the series seemed to be Dennis Waterman's colleagues covering up his frequent absences by saying that he'd gone to the dentist!

I hope James Bolam doesn't leave because as a team of actors they do a good job, and the contrasting characters blend very well with each other.

Yes, it would be a shame. He and Alun Armstrong are two of my favourite actors - you can always rely on a fine performance from them.

All the best

Like to agree with those who hope James Bolam isn't leaving the cast of New Tricks.

I think they have a perfect balance with the 4 main leads and Susan Jameson providing stirling support for the domestic scenes with Brian.

New Tricks is one of my favourite drama series in recent years to hit the screen. It is very well written and acted by all concerned and it is good to see a drama that has proper characterisation because that is what's wrong with the majority of todays programmes, there are no real characters in them.

Yes many TV soaps etc rely too much on young characters to get "the kids" to watch the programme, but they are unable to do anything more than speak in cliches and squeal that infernal greeting "Hi ya!" in a high pitched voice! Sadly the older characters are often reduced to being the silly sod comedy turn for light relief in what would otherwise be boring unoriginal dialogue, tired old storylines and ill-conceived anti-climactic cliff-hanger moments!

If it was just soaps I wouldn't mind so much becauseI despise them all and I am only forced to watch if I happen to be at someone's house who is too rude to turn the TV off in company. Unfortunately Soap Disease has spread to many TV dramas, and those that employ ex-soap actors are not doing themselves any favours, because you end up with a one or two hour drama that is just as awful as watching a soap episode! Sod all plot, no sub plot whatsoever, dreadful characters, weak stories and dialogue suffering from exhaustion.

Thankfully there is still my VCR and DVD to watch!

An accurate review I must say and I totally agree with it.
