I don't get to see it very often now, but I suppose I'd agree with those people who've described it as easy-going and effortless. I don't hate it but I can see why someone might if it doesn't appeal to them in the first place. In truth the programme probably has seen better days, but I rather like the way it's become a home for elderly actors you don't see much elsewhere: Dora Bryan, Burt Kwouk, Brian Murphy, Stephen Lewis, Jean Alexander etc., even Norman Wisdom occasionally! And of course Peter Sallis and Frank Thornton.
To digress, slightly: when I was a teenager in the 1960s, Peter Sallis always seemed to crop up as rather sinister characters, very often in one-off play series such as Armchair Theatre. Amazing really that fame from an entirely different character was only just around the corner, and has even led him on to such career peaks as Wallis & Grommit! I also find it incredible that at 85 or whatever he is now, he doesn't seem to look that different from how he looked in the 60s.
Like others, I'm happy enough to watch Summer Wine if I'm around and have nothing else to do, but it's hardly essential viewing.
