Default Nation on Film

Did anyone else see Nation on Film (7:30pm BBC2 on Monday)?
It was on just after Mythbusters

It's a BBC / Open University series about the use of film as an eyewitness to history. The first one was looking at holiday films. Early 8mm cameras became available at a reasonable price just about at the same time as holidays abroad became possible in the 1950s & 60s. Some of them were commercial films by Thomas Cook and other Travel Agents. Others were home movies made by amateurs. Interesting stuff. See Southern Spain and Ibiza before it got covered in hotels and apartments - and tourists.

Missed it. Darn. I have seen some repeats of these on BBC 4 and have been very interested. Are any of them released/due to be on DVD at all ?

Watched the first 10 minutes and had to turn it off. It was awful, and the voiceover by David Jason, where did he get that accent? It was billed as home movies, but was nothing but travelogues.

Have to admit that DJ has been a stumbling block for me in the reapeats I've seen, but the ordinary films have been so fascinating, I have managed to stick with it...

I think that's his normal speaking voice - he doesn't actually speak like Del Boy or Granville

Yes, it was all travelogues. That was the subject of the programme. Some were made professionally by and for travel agents but some were made by amateurs as well. It was the amateur ones that were generally the more interesting

Yes - a fascinating programme, with some interesting updates - eg the family who revisited the scene of their old movie-making, and the interview with the female "star" of the travelogue made 4 decades earlier.

I hadn't realised that it was David Jason until the closing credits revealed the narrator's identity - he did sound different from his usual roles.

Just one "criticism" - I'd like to have seen some "dissolves" from the original films into the modern locations.
