Default Seven Ages of Rock

Was good that, especially if you're a Hendrix fan. Personally I'd have preferred more time given to the music, and an overview of rock from the mid to late 60s rather than focusing chronologically on Hendrix and giving the likes of the Beatles just a brief mention. That said, the moptops have probably been done to death in tv biographies.

Next week it's Floyd and Bowie, then I presume punk and the Pistols. It looks like the remaining four are Heavy Metal, Stadium Rock, Grunge, Indi/Britpop.

That's how he'll end up if the Leeds fans get hold of him.

It was good, especially showing the influence of British musicians on Hendrix. Those same musicians that were in turn influenced by American blues and sold it back to the Americans.

Could do with a similar programme on British acts of the time like the Stones, Who, Animals etc.

Steve
There's a show I would watch too. I am looking forward to the Pink Floyd 'Seven Ages...' programme next week, hopefully there'll be a few old prog rockers in attendance from the likes of King Crimson, Uriah Heep, Focus, ELP etc.

Not my favourite era this week, I like some of the art-school music of Floyd, Bowie and to a lesser extent Roxy Music, but the programme failed to show just how self-indulgent and overblown prog-rock became. Punk was a blessed relief.

And I just found the Velvet's repetetive and overrated.

Wonder if we'll skip Led Zep?

Self-indulgent and overblown? The show hardly mentioned Rick Wakeman
It hinted at it towards the end, saying how The Wall was intended to break down the wall between the band and the audience - but was so big and complex to stage that it just increased the separation.

They didn't mention Hawkwind who had a better light show and a more complex show than many of the bands mentioned. They included things like SF author Michael Moorcock and dancer Stacia on stage. But I suppose they didn't fit into the "art school" category that they were trying to stress in this programme.

I'm always left with a mental image of ELP playing Fanrfare in an empty stadium.

As overblown as The Wall was I think it was topped by U2's Zootv which was just a massive sensory overload and must have required a small vllage of roadies to erect.

I first saw Hawkwind at St Andrew's Hall, Norwich, 1973 (ish) .... psychedelic lights, sci-fi rock, naked Stacia on stage - fantastic .... and the following week we had both Focus and Tangerine Dream .... with Uriah Heep just down the road in Ipswich .... great days for a teenager !

All we get locally these days are tribute bands and people and old fart like me has never heard of .... mind you, I did catch the reformed Focus in London last year and The Strawbs in Cambridge so it's not all bad.

Hawkwind
Focus
Tangerine Dream

Uriah Heep
