I've noticed a thread on here entitled 'Armchair Theatre', but am I right in thinking there was a series called 'Armchair Thriller' as well? It would have been on during the late 1970s or thereabouts and I think it was on ITV.

Although I was just a kid at the time, I do have a vague recollection of some episodes, but I also remember 'Tales of the Unexpected' being shown around the same time, so perhaps I'm confusing some of the episodes. One story I recall involved someone dressed up in what appeared to be a monk's cloak, I think, and his face was never revealed. I've no idea what the episode was called, but does anyone else remember?

Armchair Thriller: Quiet as a Nun: Network DVD

Thanks very much for that Jaycad. I didn't even know the series was available on DVD, so I shall see about getting hold of them.

On a wet and windy Sunday in November what better thing to do but raid the DVD shelves. Armchair Thriller caught our eye and on went High Tide. Made in 1979 but aired in 1980 so the nostalgia kicked in immediately as our old car, a red R reg. Austin Princess opened the drama.

Not mentioned in the Data Base critique but I could not help noticing the strong Hitchcock influences in the narrative style and particularly in the soundtrack. The music certainly helped set the mystery theme. If I had expected an action thriller I would have been deeply disappointed. It was a paced mystery with the plot released little by little by the narrator, who was also the lead, Lovejoy himself; Ian McShane. Two others easily recognised were John Bird and Malcolm Terris.

To tell too much would spoil the enjoyment as, I repeat, the plot is paced and facts are only disclosed as the central character learns them. The plot device is a narrative as there is no Dr Watson, McShane was either alone or in 'trust no one situations'.

Most of the action is on a medium sized motorised sailing ship on the Cornish coast. The nub is that he knows something but he does not know what and when he starts to realise what he knows he does not know the meaning of it at all. (There are known knowns and knowns we don't know US Secretary of State remember?). There are a couple of badies tracking him in case he remembers. I hope I have confused you all enough to record the episode and sit down, like me, and watch a really well made British drama for TV as only we can do them. Check Film 24's schedules for a screening.
