Reply With QuoteOutstanding programme, very good adaptation of the original James story, unlike A View from a Hill which was on Sunday night. That changed the story too much for my liking and I found it very disappointing.

The Stalls of Barchester
Monday 17 December
11:40pm - 12:30am
An adaptation of MR James's ghost story about an ambitious cleric who decides to advance his career by murdering his archdeacon. Soon he is stalked by creatures that seem to spring from the very fabric of his church.
Very creepy this one!
Check out your radio times as there are more vintage Ghost Stories on successive evenings...

I wasn't sure how they were going to spin this out for 45mins but it worked and was very enjoyable too.

An excellent MR James adaptation, with Robert Hardy particularly good. I must admit though I don't know why it is a bit of a shock to see "Mavis Riley" in this and "Young Mr Grace/Mr Blewitt". Another Norfolk based favourite is the wonderful one with Peter Vaughan, Warning To the Curious.

M R James has been a fruitfull source for film makers. I found the '70s ones are still the best. Lost Hearts is still my favorite - those two children and the hurdy gurdy music still chills me.

I was alerted to the 1970's adaptations by a former workmate. I managed to tape "The Stalls of Barchester" some years ago - still one of my favourite M R James adaptations. Tonight's offering, Charles Dickens's "The Signalman" is well worth catching - a creepy tale with a great performance by (I seem to remember) Denholm Eliott.

I'd recorded Wednesday night's two M R James stories on to DVD - and now the blarsted disc seems to be corrupt - DVD player can't read them and I can't eject the disc!
Does anyone know how to eject a disc from a DVD that doesn't want to eject it - even my time-honoured "reboot" method doesn't work.
Have gone back to video tape for the Thursday night showings!
Are these films available commercially? Might be easier!

Try unplugging the power for a few minutes....may work !
Is this a DVDR disc ? I avoid them like the plague......
